I mainly see the advantage being if you wanted a general community to gain a lot of subscribers as you appear in "local" and random people spot you, rather than having to seek you out.

However, it does mean that it can be slow and unstable, the "local" feed can be a real firehose of content that you don't experience subbing in from another server and, apparently, being the largest puts a massive target on your back.
