I wonder how this worked out for them, specifically, in the end. The wife/mother has a very longsuffering look on her face.

Probably fine. I think a lot about how Bayer, which literally made the gas for the chambers, is still around and apparently doing well. And while Germany was war ravaged, it wasn't to a much greater extent than the rest of Europe.

Yes but I also imagine many of the males in that picture died or were injured

Germany lost an entire generation of males during WWII. They didn't run out of war machines, they ran out of soldiers.

The book Die Deutsche Mutter und ihr erstes Kind (The German Mother and her first child) by Johanna Haarer was very popular during that time and even basic book for education in the Reichsmütterschule (Reichs mother's school) and even after the war. The fortunately last reprint is from 1987.

It's a very sad reality, not only in Germany.

I bet the oldest son got drafted towards the end.

[–] Successful_Try543@feddit.org 10 points 4 months ago

I'd bet both elder sons got drafted, as the one on the right looks like 9-10.

Well ~~the Weimar Republic~~ Germany before the Nazis was also a regressive shithole run by an absolutely terrible monarch. I'm sure the wife had been suffering in Germany for a while

E: I made a silly mistake

That's the German Empire. The Weimar Republic was an unstable shithole run by a revolving series of coalitions that ended with ze Nazis.

[–] rockSlayer@lemmy.world 10 points 4 months ago (2 children)

That's right lol I forget how short lived the Republic was

Blink and you'll miss it!

It survived longer than the Nazi reign did though

14.5 years compared to ~12
