GitHub has an official app now which, I have to admit, is really great!

No, but it was not a requirement I believe.
GitHub itself is definitely not open-source. That's a frequent criticism of the service. The app might be, but it would be a weird departure from their normal distribution model.
Do you hapen to know where? Searching seems to give no results.
I found this repo of an earlier version of their app: https://github.com/github/android
As you'll see, that redirects to a different repo, because they abandoned it.
