Carpet moths have been culled, yesterday. Partner and I broke out backs cleaning everything top to bottom.

Bug spray (and lots of ventilation for the cat, both sliding doors were open, after I sprayed and left the bedroom for a while), vaccum, floor shampoo, vaccum, floor shampoo, vaccum, bug spray, floor shampoo, vaccum.

Did a walk around this morning and it appears the nests that were starting have been fucked up. Looks like the moths that survived have tried to lay eggs elsewhere (under the dining table), so another spray'n'vacc will be on the cards today.

Still have to clean the shower, and the kitchen floor, and a wipe down of surfaces again. But everything else is seemingly coming together. I'm stuffed, but it's just me today, so wish me luck lol

I had no idea these were a thing. New fear unlocked.

Wait until you hear about bedbugs. Nightmarish things

They're an invasive species, of course, and their grubs eat natural fibres. So anything wool or cotton is food for them. Even books. I only know about them because I worked for a pest control company. They can come in on shoes or clothes, or fly in. No idea how they got in, but I never want to live in a place with carpet ever again.

Much easier to clean tiles or floorboards, sigh

I had moths eat calligraphy brushes. After the moths I bought a long pencil case .

And yes, carpet is horrible. Rugs are much nicer.

I was reading that climate change will bring higher humidity and that will encourage more moths and bugs.

I kind of hate having carpet. It could be cold and rugs could be expensive/a trip hazard but it would be nice to have a setup where you could just sweep, easily wipe up cat vom/pee, and throw rag rugs in the wash whenever they were dirty

Good work and is it normal to have cleaning envy?

[–] StudChud@aussie.zone 3 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I envy those who can afford to hire cleaners, does that count? Hahaha

[–] Seagoon_@aussie.zone 3 points 7 months ago

That also works.

YAAAAS Take that moths! Good work. Last inspection I had I didn't get to clean the shower enough so I just closed the curtain and it worked - she didn't even open it. So do what you can. 💪

Last time we apparently didn't clean the shower enough, it was spotless but had a few streak lines 😑

This time it is someone else, so she can jump if she takes issue with clean streaks lol

Nice!

Just in case you wanted a long lasting non-chemical passive.

Be careful with this stuff, both in applying and where you use it, as while it's non-toxic you or the cat can so easily breathe it in and get silicosis. Don't put it in areas where the cat can get to it or high traffic areas you may kick it up. And I recommend applying it with an old big paintbrush rather than using the rubber bulb to puff it out, as it hangs suspended in the air for some time.

But there's silica dust that can be applied in a thin layer over a surface and it will passively kill bugs by dehydrating them to death. It can last many years. I used it inside top shelves of cupboards for a really nasty infestation years ago and am still seeing dead moths. https://diypestsolution.com.au/product/rockwell-labs-cimexa-insecticide-bed-bug-dust-killer/
