Depending on what battery eco-system you buy into, the batteries can be used for a lot of different stuff.
I have Victa and Snapper battery powered tools, so just limited to mowers, snippers, blowers, etc.
My Dad uses Ozito stuff, so on top of the above he can use the batteries for drills, vacuums, angle grinders and other power tools.
That's just it though; I'd like them to be compatible with each other so there's competition for battery quality and no lock-in
That's fair. It would be nice to have what ever battery, and be able to plug into which ever tool (might be a market for after market battery adaptors). I feel like the brand name of the tool is some kind of indicator of the quality of the accompanying battery as well.
Modular power supplies have a similar problem in the PC building world. The cables are not interchangeable between brands due to different pin-outs (5V, 12V, etc), and sometimes not even interchangeable between the same brand with different models of power supplies.
