Don't use anything Samba unless you absolutely have to because of Windows. Its a shit protocol.
It is fairly use friendly and doesn't have the same permission issues as NFS. Its slow but it works fine.
While I agree, I do run a Windows gaming PC so Samba is the best thing for it. I've passed FTP through hoping for better speeds but, while I can see my stuff I can't interact with them.
Also, that's just like, your opinion man.

You can use NFS on Windows
I can, but as I say, the way I've done it doesn't work. On windows at least, it works on my phone.
Unless you're using the horribly outdated and insecure v1, there's nothing wrong with Samba at all. For serving media it's just as fast as NFS and is often plain easier to get going. Use what works for you.
