No we don't. Russia doesn't have the resources to fight a war on two fronts.

Unfortunately, russia has plenty of resources. Its army is now bigger than it was in feb 2022. Thr reason for using prisoners is actually quite brilliant on their end - few will be missed, but they'll still consume ammo to get killed. Helps with wasting Ukraine's resources as well as keeping the society calm at home.

More people does not mean more power. It means more bodies for the meat grinder. North Korea has one of the largest armies in the world. Very few people believe they would be that effective as a fighting force. And they're trained. Manpower doesn't matter as much when Ukraine keeps shooting down their planes and sinking their ships.

Russia has no reliable way of getting troops into Transnistria. Their Black Sea fleet is in no condition for an amphibious invasion and trying to air lift an invasion force into the region would get them shredded by Ukrainian (hell, maybe even Romanian) air defense.

Bad time to be in the Belarusian air force

Bad time to be a Belorussian anything other than an expat

That's okay, because Europe has no interest in fighting other than diplomatic maneuvers like offering NATO (eventually, maybe, as long as there's no risk of a fight).

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 15 points 8 months ago (2 children)

Europe doesn't need to fight. Ukraine is doing it for them and doing a good enough job that the Russian army, supposedly one of the world's most powerful fighting forces, is being so reduced that Putin has not only resorted to a draft, but resorted to using prisoners as front line troops.

Ukraine absolutely needs funding and weapons. But getting European forces involved in a larger war doesn't appear necessary.

The dark hilarity of it is the headlines that suppose Russia can't even handle the economic backlash of winning the war at this point. Imagine holding those bags of shit.
