As an American-Brit who has been living in Sweden for a couple of years, I've always found it interesting that pretty much everyone I know here can be found at their home address simply by googling their name and clicking on hitta.se. When I show this to my British or American friends, they're always shocked, and I find myself explaining that "Swedes have a very different, more trusting, relationship with their government than Brits or Americans."

Personally, I've never had a problem arise from this, and neither has anyone I know here, but I've been here less than for two years. I love it here and I can see myself living here for the rest of my life (that is, if you'll have me! Soon time to renew my visa!)

But I find myself wondering: Has anyone here, or anyone you know, ever had a problem arise from their address being listed publicly? Strange people turning up at your door, weird post or packages, or something worse?

Why are you people arguing for open registries and exploited personal details?

Why are you literally claiming that having your address, ID number and phone number out in the open makes no difference for people who do not want to be found?

What the fuck is going on lol

If there's need for it, you can get a "hidden identity". My mom was excluded from things like hitta.se for the majority of my life since she didn't want my dad to be able to find her. You would not be able to find her adress or phone number without some heavy digging. If you need that kind of safety due to threats against you, there are options.

Now, most criminals would probably be able to find you anyway, but when it comes to domestic violence, very few abusers have access to a net of other criminals that could help them track you down so it still serve a purpose.

Why would I need a hidden identity for not letting random strangers know exactly where I live and what my phone number is?

Do you realise how crazy this is ?

Crazy? No. Annoying as fuck? Yes.

I've got a phone phobia. The fact that random strangers are calling me over and over again during the day stresses me the fuck out to the point that my phone is always in silent mode and I sometimes miss important calls due to this. It's not like it was when I was a kid and the only people calling you actually needed to reach you for a legitimate cause. And back then anyone could still get your adress or phone number from the "Telefonkatalogen". Yet strangers didn't call. So public contact information is not the problem in my opinion.

And I get that there are dangers with this, I do. I just think the benefits are greater. And why do you think a random stranger would ever just decide to get in contact with another random stranger by visiting hitta.se? That's as crazy as it gets. Most people don't just start bothering strangers out of the blue.

That’s not the point. Privacy is incredibly important.

You do know you can have the online registries to not show your information, right? You don't even have to have your phone number visible if you don't want to. You'd be hard-pressed to find my phonenumber anywhere online.

You can. And they can comply but will automatically add it back up regularly, because they are not legally required to follow your wishes.

Try adding a phonenumber and see all your stuff come back.

Odd, haven't had my phonenumber pop back up on hitta.se or anything again for like 10 years, but alright.

Great anecdote, that sure means that it’s non existant.

Why are you dying on this hill and supporting private information out in the open and trying to sell it as non problematic?

It's public info even if it's not on hitta... anyone in the public can see or find out that info anyway

Which it shouldn’t be, I have no idea how a bunch of Redditors are supporting a boomer anti-privacy policy.

Are you all 65 years old relying on the phone book?

How are you not getting what I am saying. If you take away all the policy, it's still public info. That is information the public can literally see or hear in the public without any help

[–] Dannebot@leddit.danmark.party 1 points 1 year ago

Apokalyptisk at 2023-07-06 11:05:59+00:00 ID: jqvi8he

There is a difference between being "public info" as in, you have to order it from the government,

And an open registry online which can be viewed, crawled and scraped by anyone or anything.

How are you not understanding how this is a privacy issue?

You are either completely missing his point or just acting dumb since you have no other argument besides ”but muh privacy!!!”

Your example of girl getting stalked on Hitta makes no sense. Don’t successful stalkers exist outside of Sweden or what? People can easily find out where you live by either talking to close contacts, looking at pictures on IG, finding out your workplace or common shops and follow you home etc. etc. Hitta maybe just makes this process faster but even if you have a fake adress there, they will find you..

Also no one who you replied to arguing that it is a good thing that Hitta exists. Where are you getting that from?

I never said that, i said it was easier - whilst you all claimed it was literally no issue.

"but muh privacy" should be absolutely fucking enough, you absolute dipshit.

How about this - maybe you can find some sense -

Your grandmother gets a call from "her bank" that builds her trust as they have ALL her personal information in front of them, telling her to log in using BankID, taking her money.

Thats fine too? Because the elderly getting scammed is no issue, right?

"Well they are getting scammed outside of Sweden too" - Yes you fucking imbecile, but it's EASIER to do when you have everyones personal information out in the open.

And it's not just hitta, try to get erased from Ratsit and MerInfo or MrKoll.

Oh and then move or do something else that updates your ID number in the database, it might just magically appear again.

Fucking morons.
