Except that Lemmy did catch on.
It didn't catch on to the point that it got as big as Reddit, but anyone who expected that is a fool. It caught on to the point that it's viable - it's not going anywhere. And as time goes on, it's going to continue to grow. And that's sufficient, and really IMO to its advantage. Lemmy has a different feel from Reddit, and I like it better. And the new users it attracts over time are going to be people who appreciate it. And if the bulk of the meme-regurgitating karma whores stay on Reddit, all the better for Lemmy.
I have no idea and don't have the time now to check, but I'm curious what the initial user base for Reddit was when people left digg in comparison to the Reddit to Lemmy move, also how long it took for Reddit users to overtake digg users
Biggest difference between Lemmy and Reddit for me is that when I go to view my notifications every day and feel that apprehensive feeling of "Fuck, who am I fighting with/defending myself from now?", it's almost always good vibes and pleasant responses. Except when I criticize popular fantasy authors and make everyone mad for a day. But that's on me.
