I love how this post was made by a Sharkey user and has Mastodon users responding, despite me viewing via Lemmy.
Now witness the power of this fully open-source social media platform!
It's not the open-sourceness, but the interconnectivity of the fediverse. Meta could, in theory, do this with WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram.
Meta can do this only because it owns all the 3 companies. No private entity would want to exchange user-data with others.
