I don't think it was that he was so evil, he was so hurt and betrayed by Calypso.

I actually kinda like Cutler Beckett as the true villain. He represents the world at large and the turn of the century, the literal end of the age of piracy. And you have this ragtag group of murderers and miscreants trying to stand up for their way of life.

It's all framed as a heroic last stand, of course.

No, I agree. I liked the decision to not have Davy jones be entirely villainous. Although I did take issue with the inconsistency of the story later on. Like, if Jones can stand in a bucket of sea water to go on land, then can’t he just fill some sealed shoes with water and walk on land? It’s all rather ambiguous.

Rule of cool? Bucket of water at least kind of makes sense, while wet socks is just lame

Yes, although I still love the idea of Davy Jones running around with tiny water buckets strapped to each of his feet.
