It's okay on regular roads here, not on the autobahn though. Though most of the time there are already bike roads so it's not really necessary to have. This road for example connects two towns across 33 kilometres. I don't know if anyone actually commutes by bike with that though, but it's definitely there as an option.
I'm definitely looking forward to taking the dog for some rides at least partway down that road come next year. There's plenty of little break spots, offshoots into forests, and bathing areas to check out.
