backslashes remove all formatting so *hello* can be written as \*hello* without becoming hello

you can also escape other backslashes

Uhh not sure.

I think the formatting is called Markdown? But sites like this usually use a limited form of it, so I'm not entirely sure.

The italics, bold, link formatting , quotes etc are all pretty common.
