They are kinda different
One is a microblobbing service and the other is a content aggregation service. And then there is Kbin which is both.
Lemmy is Reddit. Mastodon is Twitter.

I kinda wish they were both integrated.
Since they are part of the fediverse and use the same underlying technology, they are integrated! E.g. users on a mastodon instance can follow lemmy communities
