Reddit was an open source project from June 18, 2008, until 2017.

Around this time is when things started going downhill. The new UI got introduced. r/all got censored and cleaned up. Push towards official mobile apps. Third party experiences got limited. Aggressive focus towards monetisation.

Indeed, hindsight is 20/20.

Indeed, Aaron Swartz’s philosophy was evident throughout old Reddit.
