Putin's clearly supposed to look like a monkey in the picture (also: "Mein Banan"). I didn't even see the connection to Hitler.

[–] rdri@lemmy.world 5 points 20 hours ago

Made me think your point is that this picture is racism towards monkeys.

[–] superkret@feddit.org 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

How do you get from making him look like a monkey to racism?

[–] Prunebutt -5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Do you have any idea about the history of "caricature strangers to look like monkeys"?

[–] superkret@feddit.org 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] Prunebutt 2 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Caricaturing people of other ethnicities look like monkeys to degrade them has a looong, racist tradition. About 100 years ago, russians were considered a backwards, horde of uncivilized asian/mongols in Europe.

I simply see these kinds of caricatures as racist. And I'm not alone in this.

It's about as cool as depicting him as a kraken (antisemitic), or as a drag queen, to "own" him.

[–] thericofactor@sh.itjust.works 3 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

People, not person. That's the obvious difference you seem to be consequently ignoring here to try to incite discussion.

[–] Prunebutt 0 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

So caricaturing Obama as a monkey wouldn't be racist, then?

He would even "deserve" it, being a war criminal and all that.

[–] thericofactor@sh.itjust.works 1 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

black people as a race are historically insulted by depicting them as primates and of course that would weigh much more than this case of a single Caucasian man. Hence racism as opposed to insult.

[–] Prunebutt 0 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah, all of a sudden, russians are "caucasian". It's very convenient to hide racism behind "that's not a race, though". /s

People used to be racist against italians, baltic people and the irish. Don't tell me that a russian person is ok, because they're "white".

[–] thericofactor@sh.itjust.works 2 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Come on, how is a caricature of one man, the instigator of a war on a neighboring country considered racism? I've seen Donald Trump depicted as a Donkey or a Pig so many times, is that okay then? Or is that racism towards all Americans? Did you consider you are seeing things that are not really there and that you might be part of a small group of people that are too sensitive towards these caricatures?

[–] Prunebutt -1 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago)

As I've said before: monkey caricatures have historical precedent. It's about as bad as depicting him like a kraken/squid.

[–] Skates@feddit.nl -2 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago) (1 children)

About 100 years ago, russians were considered a backwards, horde of uncivilized asian/mongols in Europe.

About 100 years ago Europe had just faced Russian raping and pillaging in a world War, and they'd soon face it again in the next war. For all intents and purposes, they were a backward horde of uncivilized fucks.

But hey, they are sure proving they're different nowadays, with them raping their way through another war.

[–] Prunebutt 0 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah, it was the savage barbarism of the backwater russian nature that made the rusrian soldiers pillageeand rape our white women. No other nation's army did anything of the sort. Let's remember that the russians where the canonical bad guys of world war 1, 2 and 3. /s

[–] Skates@feddit.nl 0 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Unless you're from a country that's suffered a Russian occupation during one of the wars, you don't get to claim knowledge on the subject. And if you had been, you'd know what you wrote is literally true, no shadow of sarcasm about it.

[–] Prunebutt -1 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

My grandfather was in a soviet prison camp. Fuck you and your racist revisionism.

[–] jas0n@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago) (1 children)

Man, you've been baiting this entire thread to drop that line. Get over yourself.

[–] Prunebutt -1 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Now I'm not allowed to correct some bullshit someracist claims about me?

In case you forgot: I'm arguing against demonizing the people of Russia.

[–] jas0n@lemmy.world 1 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

So, I'm a bit mad at the people in Russia who support Russia's WAR in Ukraine. I don't hate them. Many of them are uninformed. You are attributing racism to the anger most of the world feels toward that joke of a country.

[–] Prunebutt -1 points 18 hours ago

I'm simply afraid that the condemnation of the war in Ukraine leads to people submitting to some racist narrative, without even realizing it. I've seen it happen in German discourse. It also happened during the "war on terror".

[–] Skates@feddit.nl -1 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago) (1 children)

Oh nice, must've been one of the ones that got away. Most other Russian empire victims are dead, their wives and daughters raped, their homes looted and burned, and USSR engraved into the collective mindset as a destructive evil force.

[–] Prunebutt -2 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah, sure. Tell a person from Germany that the USSR were the bad guys. What's the worst thing that could happen? /s

Seriously, you're literally the kind of racist, I was warning about.

[–] Skates@feddit.nl 0 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

If you're not aware that Germany and USSR were dividing Europe between themselves and both were just as evil until one of them stabbed the other in the back, you don't know your own country's history. Maybe look into the ribbentrop-molotov pact and how while you were busy fighting England and France, the USSR not only did nothing - they were just as evil, but hiding behind the great German threat. Look into the Katyn massacre, where the NKVD executed thousands of polish prisoners of war in the Katyn forest. Look into how they invaded the Baltic countries and deported/killed ~150000 thousand Lithuanians, Latvians and Estonians while international attention was still focused on Germany. Look into how they invaded and annexed Bessarabia and northern Bukovina also ignored because everyone was up in arms about Germany. They were hand-in-hand with Nazi Germany, and the only reason they fought back was because they were attacked by Hitler. Ironically - because IT WAS THE FUCKING RUSSIANS who broke the agreement and annexed more than they had agreed with the nazis, by setting foot into Bukovina. I'm not even gonna get into how I know they went around raping everyone in sight. But you're out here spouting shit like you have any fucking idea what world you live in. What a fucking joke.

You say it's racist to acknowledge a country has a history of war crimes that goes on to this day. I say it's fucking stupid not to. And if you choose to ignore it and instead for some reason bring racism into the equation, you can go get fucked for all I care. You have literally no clue what you're talking about, and I'm done debating war crimes with armchair scientists who have the luxury of a history of being the aggressor, not the agressed.

[–] Prunebutt -2 points 17 hours ago

You say it's racist to acknowledge a country has a history of war crimes that goes on to this day.

That's not what you claim. You claim that russians (distinct from some Czar/General Secretary/Komisar/President) is a "horde of savage parbarians who pil/age and rape our white women".

[–] technocrit@lemmy.dbzer0.com -1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's really sad that you have to explain this.

[–] Prunebutt -1 points 1 day ago

Apparently, I'm a russian asset for pointing this out.

Because racism is good if it targets the right people. /s

[–] hitwright@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Hitler is famous for his book "Mein Kampf" which translates to "My fight" the book cover is literally almost the same.

Still don't get how making fun of a warmonger using a history person makes me racist tho.

Is it that you look highly at Putin and have embraced his cult of personality?

[–] Klear@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Putin is a race now, apparently.

[–] Prunebutt -5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Thanks, I know of Hitler and Mein Kampf. I even know German, wouldn't you believe it. 🙄 (Also: the better translation would be "My Struggle")

Can't you see that the image looks a lot like racist caricatures of when humans (usually plack people) where drawn like/compared to apes.

Is it that you look highly at Putin and have embraced his cult of personality?

WTF? Taking umbridge with racist imagery means that I'm a Putin simp now? Do you *reallyy think that racist caricatures are OK when it's directed at the "right" people? O.o

[–] hitwright@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I guess I can see the connection you're trying to make. But I can hardly still connect it to mindless rascism since there are quite a few reasons why monkey comparison is used.

There is a cult of personality around Putin, or any other dictator. Where making fun of him, lands you in jail. Public images like that are a fight against it. (Like Jinping drawn like winnie pooh).

Also I'm pretty sure that you're the one being racist. Since you saw the monkey and instantly came to the conclusion of racism (with the example of black people). For shame.

[–] Prunebutt 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

But I can hardly still connect it to mindless rascism since there are quite a few reasons why monkey comparison is used.

Are the reasons because russians are sub-humans, maybe? /s

Again: how does this excuse racism? You're constantly dodging the issue.

Also I'm pretty sure that you're the one being racist.

Ah, the good old alt-right defense of "I can't be racist if I didn't think about it. In fact, if you think aboutit, you're the racist"-defense. 🙄

[–] hitwright@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I guess you see Putin and think all Russians. Sad. You should really try to meet some. Quite interesting people with their own culture and traditions.

Also I'm pretty sure quite a lot of them right now would feel quite attacked by you grouping them with the Ape that decides it's a good idea to casually launch ICBMs and risk preemptive response.

[–] Prunebutt -3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

"I'm not antisemitic. I really like the good Jews". /s

[–] hitwright@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I'm sorry for the challenges you face in your daily life. I really thought you were smart enough to know the difference between Putin and general Russian populus. I wish you best of luck in your endeavours, friend.
