Can we not devolve into shit talking other communities

Honestly, no, and we shouldn't. Hexbear actively enjoys ruining other people's experiences here, same as exploding heads and other similar places. We shit talk those guys as a way of spreading warning of known bad actors.

as many on here claim hexbear is

Are you saying you think it isn't (bold claim) or that you are somehow unfamiliar with them?

I am, however, making the distinction that we don't need to witch-hunt other communities

Pointing out that a community is bad when someone links directly to that community is not a witch-hunt

I think you're thinking that I'm falling into the tolerance paradox. Not what I'm about. Again: if you're actively hostile and harming others, then don't expect others to be tolerant when you're being an asshole.

I'm also getting at not letting the fight spill from the alley into the street.

I've heard of hexbear, just not interacted with them.

I’ve heard of hexbear, just not interacted with them.

Your instance has defederated them and spared you the trouble, consider yourself lucky. Hexbear users are known to be some of the most abusive users here all around. They regularly post image spam in comments, make divisive and bad faith accusations, as well as the usual promotion of promotion of pro-Russia and pro-CCP propaganda.

So they really aren't good, not in a "personal opinion" kind of way but in an agreed upon sense, which is why many instances have defederated them or refuse to federate with them. Honestly with how much shit they've done it is disingenuous to give them the benefit of the doubt. I know you haven't seen or interacted with their shit personally but honestly that's all the more reason you shouldn't be trying to defend their actions.
