I know it's probably anecdotal, but I feel like I have always seen a ridiculous amount of rape news from India.
You're right. It could be bias that only those stories make it over here often. For sure America has its own issues with endless shootings stories or police violence.
I guarantee school shooting stories make it to India every time it happens. Pretending that gang rape isn't a major problem in India under an article about a mass medical staff strike linked directly to a gang rape is fucking ridiculous.
Many cases of crimes against women go unreported in India due to the stigma surrounding sexual violence, as well as a lack of faith in the police. Women’s rights activists say the problem is particularly acute in rural areas, where the community sometimes shames victims of sexual assault and families worry about their social standing. Still, the number of recorded rape cases in the country has increased. In 2022, police recorded 31,516 reports of rape — a 20% jump from 2021, according to the National Crime Records Bureau.
America has a gun problem and India has a rape problem
Look up some statistics, this is simply not true comparatively.
India has 2.6 per 100k and USA is 41.8 per 100k.
The data sucks, and is hard to level, but even still you can see that they are not even close to the worst countries.
And while there is an estimated 60% of unreported rapes in India, that doesn't even come close to making the gap, not to mention there is under reporting in the US as well.
Yeah but you're leaving out gang rapes. Plus it's impossible to accurately estimate unreported rapes. How often do you see cases of gang rapes in a public setting inside America? No one is saying rapes in America dont happen but to claim India doesn't have a serious problem regarding rape is just disingenuous. And the source I used is coming from a women's rights activist so I'm going to take their word for it instead of a random on the internet.
It's like claiming America doesn't have a gun problem just because intentional shootings in El Salvador or Venezuela happen at a higher rate
