Often folks will just debate for debate sake, not actually trying to understand the other person - that is rather boring.

Good for you, in my experience mostly mutual exclusive activities. Debating is about finding argument for your opinion and trying to convince the other side. While conversation is about trying to understand where the other person is coming from and relating to their experience.
