I started with patterns and had a miserable experience because the first kits I got were on 26 count and labeled as "for children" or "beginner friendly" oof! Moving to printed ones saved my interest in the hobby but I get stressed out when the print doesn't match the aida. Now I'm back to patterns and buying my own threads and having a blast! Pattern keeper makes things even easier.
My first cross stitch project was a small Christmas tree in a plastic frame. I got it for 50¢ at a charity shop because I know myself--I have a habit of picking up new hobbies and not following through. The weave was wide and the pattern didn't take long to finish.
Found my current project in my photos:

I've done most of the flowers on the outside.
