Simone Weil’s great awakening (www.newstatesman.com)
submitted 1 year ago by splendid to c/solarpunk

I was not familiar with this philosopher but this quote caught my attention

It is misguided to believe that pure arguments and calculated sacrifices alone will help us face our planetary challenges. In Weil’s view, we need transformative experiences that arise when we become attentive to the natural beauty and interconnection that lies outside of ourselves. Weil calls such revelatory forms of attention “praying”:

“At its highest stage attention is the same as prayer. It assumes faith and love. It is associated with a freedom other than that of choice, which occurs at the level of the will – grace. Being so attentive that one no longer has a choice.”

Biotechnology and continued investment in biomedical research is an important component of ensuring a healthy human society. And intellectual property continues to stand in the way of that as illustrated by the TB treatment situation.

These are really fun. Do you find the wood holds up well without cracking?

I am in the camp we need both infrastructure investments and bike subsidies in the short term. I think people will start demanding more Bike infra after they experience an ebike. And for much of suburban America utility biking without electric assist is really difficult due to terrain, climate or distance.

I am simply shocked at how every major auto manufacturer is essentially giving them that advantage too. Pretty impressive how incapable they all truly are.

I feel this so much. I read this quote from my local newspaper today:

When completed, traffic engineers predict a morning rush hour that's expected to reduce current Boones Ferry Road to I-5 travel time from 6.5 minutes to 4 minutes.

While an exact starting date has yet to be set, construction will begin soon for the $2.7 million project.

$2.7MM of land widening to save… 180 seconds off of commutes.

What resources and links should I consider adding in the sidebar about utility cycling? I am thinking advocacy organizations, gear recommendation guides, youtube channels, etc.

Yeah, I agree. Maybe you misread my comment?

Oh, you are opposed to offbrand bricks being discussed in the Lego community. Not just like opposed in general. I agree honestly. And I understand your position now :)

Why are you opposed to offbrand bricks? The way look at it the patents are expired and the purpose of patents is to enable a short term monopoly to create a profit motive for innovation. But after the patents expire then the invention belongs to everyone to build upon.

I dislike 1:1 copies of Lego sets. But copying the bricks is fine with me- and actually a good thing long term I think.

Shade (placesjournal.org)

Interesting story about urban shade. Early in the article are some interesting history tidbits like

You might imagine that transit planners call the shots — strategically placing shelters outside grocery stores and doctors’ offices on high-frequency routes, according to community need — but Los Angeles, like many cities, has outsourced the job. The first thousand shelters were installed in the 1980s by billboard companies in exchange for the right to sell ad space, and they tended to show up in wealthy areas where ad revenue surpassed maintenance costs. 2

This is a fun and useful recipe site with vegan recipes curated by the 100r.co team. I learned about soy bean hummus from this site personally.

I started recording my bike commutes on my Tern GSD to give folks a sense of the bike infrastructure in the suburbs of Portland Oregon.
