Hi there, I though of having this thread pinned mainly because I am looking for sites that have audiobooks that can be listened online without subscription. So if you have any in mind, could you please share?

So far I know only a few of them and they can be inter-related, let's say:

Apart from that, if you have something else to say, please do feel free to use this thread!

I will do my best to post something every week. I have to admit I mostly listen to non-fiction audiobooks, but not exclusively.

The Danish welfare authority, Udbetaling Danmark (UDK), risks discriminating against people with disabilities, low-income individuals, migrants, refugees, and marginalized racial groups through its use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools to flag individuals for social benefits fraud investigations, Amnesty International said today in a new report.

The report, Coded Injustice: Surveillance and Discrimination in Denmark’s Automated, details how the sweeping use of fraud detection algorithms, paired with mass surveillance practices, has led people to unwillingly –or even unknowingly– forfeit their right to privacy, and created an atmosphere of fear.

“People in non-traditional living arrangements — such as those with disabilities who are married but who live apart due to their disabilities; older people in relationships who live apart; or those living in a multi-generational household, a common arrangement in migrant communities — are all at risk of being targeted by the Really Single algorithm for further investigation into social benefits fraud,” said Hellen Mukiri-Smith.

UDK and ATP also use inputs related to “foreign affiliation” in its algorithmic models. (...) The research finds that this approach discriminates against people based on factors such as national origin and migration status.

Amnesty International also urges the European Commission to clarify, in its AI Act guidance, which AI practices count as social scoring, addressing concerns [raised by civil society](https://www.hrw.org/news/2023/10/09/eu-artificial-intelligence-regulation-should-ban-social-scoring#%3A%7E%3Atext=%28Brussels%2C+October+9%2C+2023%2Cregulation%27s+prohibition+on+social+scoring.%5D%22+said+HMS.%29.

After pressuring Azerbaijan to up gas production for export, the EU is using COP29 to greenwash the fossil fuel and its own climate image. Using not-seen-before documents, we analyse the EU's hypocrisy as its climate goals and upholding human rights are overtaken by energy security demands and greenwashing.

Since the Israeli war on Gaza began last year, the military has been imposing severe restrictions on movements across the occupied West Bank, including Hebron, the only Palestinian city alongside Jerusalem where Israeli settlers reside in the Old City.

For decades, this has meant direct Israeli control over parts of Hebron’s Old City, where nearly 35,000 Palestinians and some 800 settlers live.

The settlers are provided with protection by the soldiers, designated segregated roads and given full freedom of movement.

On the other hand, the Palestinians are forced to go through 28 checkpoints and dozens of military barriers, often being subjected to humiliating and long searches, sexual harassment and even arrest without cause.

The military restrictions and the settlers' violence spare no one, including pupils.

Before Israeli settlements began growing in Hebron in the early 2000s, the Old City used to be a vibrant hub for Palestinians,

From sabotaging Oslo to funneling Qatari cash into Gaza, Bibi has spent his career bolstering Hamas to help perpetuate the conflict. Even after Oct. 7, argues historian Adam Raz, he's still advancing the same strategy.

As world leaders debate ways to reduce carbon emissions at the COP29 climate conference in Azerbaijan ((Nov 11-22)), one Australian start-up believes fungi could be the key to mitigating climate change. The company has developed a product for farmers made from live fungi spores to help lock carbon in agricultural soils.

The International Emissions Trading Association (IETA), a business lobby comprised of some of the world’s largest fossil fuel producers and greenhouse gas emitters, is hosting a series of events in its COP29 BusinessHub pavilion, sponsored by oil and gas giants including Chevron, ExxonMobil, SOCAR, and TotalEnergies.

New documents show how a deceptive PR strategy pioneered in 1950s California first exposed the risk of climate change and then helped the industry deny it.

Israel’s siege now blocks 83% of food aid reaching Gaza, new data reveals

New data has revealed the scale of aid obstruction, and the consequential drastic fall in aid entering Gaza. This is driving a humanitarian disaster, with the entire population of Gaza facing hunger and disease, and almost half a million at risk of starvation.

Data analysis by organisations working in Gaza has found that as a consequence of the Israeli government's obstruction of aid:

  • 83% of required food aid does not make it into Gaza, up from 34% in 2023.This reduction means people in Gaza have gone from having an average of two meals a day to just one meal every other day. An estimated 50,000 children aged between 6-59 months urgently require treatment for malnutrition by the end of the year.
  • 65% of the insulin required and half of the required blood supply are not available in Gaza.
  • Availability of hygiene items has dropped to 15% of the amount available in September 2023. One million women are now going without the hygiene supplies they need.
  • Only around 1,500 hospital beds in Gaza remain operational, compared to around 3,500 beds in 2023 which was already well below sufficient to meet the needs of a population of more than 2 million people. By comparison, cities of similar size, such as Chicago and Paris average 5 to 8 times more beds than in Gaza.
  • 1.87 million people are in need of shelter with at least 60% of homes destroyed or damaged (January 2024). Yet tents for around just 25,000 people have entered Gaza since May 2024.

The IDF targets hospitals because they WANT to target hospitals.

They even gave a name to it:

Why such a heavy downvote?

[–] solo 3 points 1 month ago (5 children)

Could be the case.

For a year the Biden administration has given carte blanche to a genocidal zionist who is the head of an apartheid regime that the US has been supporting for so many decades, regardless of who was in power. What did they expect from Netanyahu? Loyalty to the party?

Thanks for sharing this cause what he says and what AP reports are quite different. And I'm saying that not being a fan of him, on the contrary.

My experience with this title/article was similar but ended with me wondering what was I expecting from a title like that, and kinda laughing about it. That's mainly why I thought of sharing it, I mean sure the recipes seem great too.

Btw sorry you got disappointed tho, I hope not too much.

I don't understand this logic. You claim that the US is supporting by all means a genocide because it's election year and out of fear of being called antisemites by the republicans? Therefore, after the elections this genocide will not be supported by the democrats anymore?

I'm sorry, this doesn't make any sense to me.

[–] solo 10 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (4 children)

I think that if the democrats win this election there is a decent chance the US could start slowly pulling support.

Why do you think that? Did I miss something perhaps? I haven't seen a hint from democrats during the past year up to now to support this claim. On the contrary, they actively send Israel tones of bombs and money to genocide Palestinians, and no matter what "red lines" the Biden administration puts on the matter, soon after they forget about them. And Harris (if I remember correctly) she said she will continue the same policy.

If you manage to find time to take a look at it at some point, I'd really love to get some feedback on the content from you and anyone else, of course.

For me everything started last year when my cat got sick and western medicine had nothing to offer him. So for the first time in my life I went to a vet that practiced both allopathic and homeopathic medicine. The results were fast and impressive. I was amazed. Then the vet she prescribed a mix of bach remedies that also worked wonders. So I started reading about homeopathy and the flower remedies and thought that it would be much-much cheaper in the long run if I started doing the mixes myself, and started getting veraciously absorbing informative material. I totally I started using them myself. Now, I also make my own tinctures, and more often than not I make more to gift to friends as well.

One thing that I like so far about herbalism (or my understanding of it) is that there are many approaches. This can be quite challenging, especially for newbies like me, but it can also be a motivation to learn more.

What about something like house insulation panels?

I suppose they should be good as acoustic panels for sound absorption as well [ex1, ex2]. Even if they are much smaller I am pretty sure they could be cut and used combined as sound insulation tiles, and them being of different width, length and depth could actually be an advantage.
