They gave a fight. If Reddit had just been silent, I bet most of the subs would be open now. Instead, Reddit has fought for every inch and in turn created an enemy to rally against. I was initially bummed and left to support the blackout and figured I'd just reduce my Reddit usage. With how nasty Reddit has acted though, I'm avoiding them as aggressively as possible now.

It's understandable. Image hosting bloats costs quite a bit. It also introduces new issues with the law as the server admin can't allow illegal pictures on it. Offloading that onto a separate image host removes both issues with only minor downsides.

I'd much rather kbin focus on long-term posting stability than worry about image hosting. If it gets big, then we can think about it. Reddit went without image hosting for years though.

I think @ernest was just being cheeky. Kbin hasn't changed much UI wise since the reddit explosion started. It's been mostly under the hood, trying to keep the ship upright in the rocky storm of users.

Good moderation tools will take time to build. We need them before the trolls arrive. Ideally, Lemmy and Kbin should try reaching out to the larger mods of Reddit to get an understanding of what tools are needed/useful. That way those tools can get on the roadmap and start being created.

Power Delete Suite should still work after they've taken the API down. It mimics you manually deleting the comments yourself.

Unfortunately, they'll probably get reopened. But you'll just have to let them move on without you. Either it'll burn in a fire, or the new mods will carry it in a new direction. Either way, it's no longer your project/baby.

I only return to see what's up in ModCoord. It's a healthy dose of "this is why I left". At least until RIF is dead, then I probably won't be going back anymore. Certainly not trying to navigate their garbage excuse of a mobile UI.

Giving out actual advice instead of just recommending divorce.

It's browser based which means there's no bare metal CPU or GPU calls in can make. It all has to go through the browsers interpreter. That massively limits it's potential.

If Reddit does manage to survive, it's going to be hilarious scrolling through the old histories. Sort of like how you can fingerprint covid times on Youtube.

I can see that as an issue as well. Griefers could easily harass other groups by creating clone instances and then filling it with shit.

A big issue with trying to merge is that some groups will have a completely different direction of discussion from the same topic. Especially with a political link to a news paper. You can't reasonably merge those conversations together.
