They can't do a hostile take over of ActivityPub. The trap is that they would come in with open arms and an army of developers. ActivityPub maintainers would at first welcome the help and guidance from such an experienced team. Then, once they have the community hooked, they spring the trap and start making changes that are actively hostile to small sites. The community flocks to the big site because everything works better there, and the dream is dead.

Now maybe it'll never happen, but it's hard to tell. Even if Facebook joined with the best intentions, that doesn't mean the project isn't going to be taken over by a power hungry manager later who could still activate the trap card.

I've bought a coffee as well.

As to federation, no Kbin hasn't really taken any stances yet, but that doesn't mean they won't in the future. But feature wise, Kbin is so new that nsfw specific features could be a long way off. I doubt even @ernest knows as I'm sure his life has been thrown a real curveball this month. If we're still here in a couple years and there's no extra nsfw features, then it's reasonable to ask what's up. Right now though? There's so many missing features that you couldn't realistically even list them all.

That's not going to work for web hosting. The only reason it works for crypto or folding is because each request takes minutes to run and there's no time dependence on returning the result. Additionally, they don't need much data and all data needed is dispersed with the task.

Websites are completely different. Each individual request is tiny, taking milliseconds to process. Each request is very time dependant, you have a person literally waiting for the result. But the biggest issue is that what people really want is stuff from a database. So that database would need up grant full access to everyone, meaning anyone could change whatever they wanted. Lastly, that database would need to be hosted anyway so you've gained nothing.

Don't suggest tech solutions when you don't have any idea what the problem or solution actually involves.

We just need Wikipedia style funding. If the server publishes their costs and fundraises, then people can support it directly. Instead of the stick and carrot of subscriptions or the rat race of ads, just be open and honest about server needs. If the users aren't able to raise funds, then cut back to what's affordable. Users will either deal with the reduced server capacity or they'll need to pay up to continue enjoying it. This doesn't need to be a free ride, but I trust the community will rally for a good service.

No, extend is a major part of it. That's how they topple community projects. They extend in good faith at first to get everyone locked in, then they extend in nefarious ways to keep the community stuck playing catch-up. Once they've absorbed all the users from the community projects, they kill off back access leaving the community project crippled in users and lost in direction.

Trust me. Facebook will definitely add great things at first but their goal is to draw users out of the fediverse and into Facebook.

It can be useful to learn for the purpose of knowing how to read it. There's still a large population of cursive writers about. I doubt cursive usage will grow anymore, even teaching it, as everything is computer based these days.

I'm sure @ernest will add your porn features. He's the moderator of several porn subs here. But you need to relax dude. This server went from nothing to exploding in a week. There's one developer and he does this as a side gig. Maybe he'll pivot to full time now but it'll take a bit. It you can't wait, other servers have been built with more porn features. Just use one of those, or use both. But overall, calm your expectations.

Federation doesn't mean everything. Each server is allowed to choose how they want to federate, who they want to federate with, and what features they want to support for their users. The entire point is to make it easier to migrate servers, not that servers are discouraged from running how they want.

If you want nsfw primarily, then join a server that values that. They will choose to federate with other nsfw servers. They will choose to include better features for nsfw content. Complaining about the lack of nsfw features here is like complaining about the lack of English federation on a French server.

You aren't paying for anything here. You don't get to dictate how a server is run nor what the developers focus on as far as features. Disagreement is fine but the power you hold is the ability to change servers.

No, a large portion of pirates are just "gimme free shit" types. They don't care about preservation nor fighting various causes. They don't care about the people who make the free shit nor seed the free shit. They care about nothing but themselves. So I'm actually not surprised to see that sort of me me me sentiment there. The people who did care are probably gone, all that's left are the leeches.

I would greatly not prefer that. Only showing top level comments means that no one would get their bad takes reined in automatically. You'd have to make the effort to see whether the replies are with or against the comment.

Is it battery operated then or is there a vampire circuit from the pedal power?
