Kevin Smith reveals how and why KillRoy Was Here became an NFT release

======================================================================

Two years after his horror anthology KillRoy Was Here received an NFT release, Kevin Smith has revealed exactly how and why that happened

By Cody Hamman

September 16th 2024, 9:14am

Two years have passed since Kevin Smith's horror anthology KillRoy Was Here made its way out into the world as an NFT -- and to this day, the only people who have seen the movie are those who have either bought the NFT, been given access to one of the NFTs, or attended a special screening. Which means so few people have seen KillRoy Was Here, it could almost be described as Smith's "lost movie." Now, while speaking to Entertainment Weekly and promoting his new film The 4:30 Movie, Smith has revealed exactly how and why the movie became an NFT release.

Directed by Smith from a script he wrote with Andy McElfresh, KillRoy Was Here was made on a minuscule budget as a project with film students at the Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida. The movie is a throwback anthology horror film featuring a creature that kills evil adults at the behest of victimized kids. The creature at the heart of the story is KillRoy, inspired by the "Kilroy was here" graffiti that became popular during World War II, showing a long-nosed man peeking over a fence. In this case, KillRoy started out as a Florida man named Roy Huggins, who was a soldier in the Vietnam War, not World War II, and when he was captured by enemy soldiers he got loose, killed a whole lot of people, and cannibalized one of the corpses. He had to be locked up in a mental institution, and when the place caught on fire Roy was left to burn. Now he's a supernatural being who stalks the Florida swamps, and his burns have left him looking a lot like that figure in the Kilroy graffiti. They say he has a psychic connection to kids, and if someone says his name three times he'll show up with his machete and start hacking away at anyone who has wronged a child.

The cast includes Harley Quinn Smith, Jason Mewes, Chris Jericho, Betty Aberlin, Ralph Garman, Daisy McElfresh, and Justin Kucsulain.

Smith told Entertainment Weekly, "We made this movie KillRoy Was Here with the kids at the Ringling College of Art and Design. I wound up with possession of the movie. When it was all done, I had this movie; perfectly watchable, Creepshow type of movie. So I reached out to Shudder and I was like, 'Hey man, you guys wanna run this? It's a Kevin Smith original, kind of horror movie. 30 grand.' That was it. Shudder was like, 'This is terrible. This isn't good enough for Shudder.' Then our producer on the movie, David (Shapiro), he goes, 'I met with this company, they are interested in buying a movie to release as an NFT. The first movie to release as an NFT, and what they wanna do is use it to showcase their blockchain technology.' And I was like, 'Oh, all right.' Perhaps this is another version of indie film, this is a new playground to go play in. Company paid us over a million dollars. I made a million dollars off of this movie. 'Not good enough for Shudder.'" Now, with that explanation, the whole NFT release strategy finally makes sense.

KillRoy Was Here may not meet up to Shudder's standards, but here's hoping more of Smith's fans will have the chance to see the movie eventually.

The Terminator 40th Anniversary 4K will also get a Limited Steelbook Edition as it reveals release details

James Cameron and Arnold Schwarzenegger's breakout hit is celebrating 40 years with a new ultra high-def transfer.

By EJ Tangonan

September 16th 2024, 9:00am

While James Cameron is a filmmaker with a passion for new technology, an eye for detail and a champion for film experience, the 4K remasters of his past films have drawn controversy over the methods and results of the transfers. As Aliens, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, The Abyss and True Lies finally get 4K releases, many have complained about the use of AI and digital smoothing methods that may have compromised the integrity of the picture. The next film of his to have a big Ultra High-Def release is his breakout hit

1984's The Terminator.

Earlier this year, the film celebrated its 40th anniversary and saw a limited screening in theaters, which we saw. Now, Blu-ray.com has revealed what the specs for the physical release 4K will entail. The release is due to arrive at retailers on November 5. And Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will additionally be releasing a special Limited Edition Steelbook 4K on the same date.

The description reads,
"Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as the most fierce and relentless killing machine ever to threaten the survival of mankind! An indestructible cyborg -- a Terminator (Schwarzenegger) -- is sent back in time to kill Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton), the woman whose unborn son will become humanity's only hope. This legendary sci-fi thriller from pioneering writer/director James Cameron, written with Gale Anne Hurd, fires an arsenal of action and heart-stopping suspense that never lets up!"

So far this month I have watched:

[–] UKFilmNerd@feddit.uk 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I really got into the television series as well, but sadly that was cancelled after just one small season, as I'm sure you're aware.

Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura has revealed that writer Akiva Goldsman has put the finishing touches on the script for the sequel to 2005’s “Hellblazer” comic-to-film adaptation “Constantine”. Talk of the sequel has swirled around for many years but picked up steam almost two years ago exactly when it was announced actor Keanu Reeves and director […]

I really want this one to happen. I know there's a lot of hate for the original film, as it differs quite a lot from the original comic. Thing is, I never read or saw the comic, so I saw the film unaware of its origins and totally loved it!

I can struggle to write a review at times but five paragraphs?!? That's barely an introduction for me! 😆

I'm not sure of the negatives, but I've heard that a one-off wealth tax, that is taxing the top 1% earners a single 1% would bring in £25bn to the treasury. Problem solved, £3bn left over.

Paramount Pictures UK has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray Jonathan Mostow's Breakdown (1997), starring Kurt Russell, J.T. Walsh, Kathleen Quinlan, M.C. Gainey, and Jack Noseworthy. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on October 21. Description: All roads lead to excitement with Kurt Russell in Breakdown, the non-stop thrill ride that's "a movie of nerve-frying intensity...Kurt Russell's best performance yet" (Rex Reed, New York Observer).

Jeff Taylor (Russell) and his wife Amy (Kathleen Quinlan) are headed toward a new life in California when their car's engine dies on a remote highway. Amy accepts a ride from a helpful trucker (J.T. Walsh) while Jeff waits with the car. But when Jeff shows up at the agreed rendezvous, he finds his wife's not there. The locals aren't talking; the police aren't much help. With no one to turn to, Jeff battles his worst fears and begins a desperate, danger-ridden search to find Amy - before it's too late!

Special Features and Technical Specs:

  • TWO-DISC SET
  • DOLBY VISION/HDR PRESENTATION OF THE FILM
  • Filmmaker Focus: Director Jonathan Mostow on Breakdown
  • Commentary By Director Jonathan Mostow and Kurt Russell
  • Victory Is Hers: Kathleen Quinlan on Breakdown

  • AND MORE...

After Australia and the US getting special edition blurays, I'm happy to see the UK finally getting a decent release as well. A great film that i haven't watched since the DVD release. I think an upgrade is in order.

I enjoyed the film in the moment but as I look back on it, even though there's a lot of things I liked, I'm not sure it is as good as I thought it was. Here's that thought elongated into 1000 words.

[–] UKFilmNerd@feddit.uk 4 points 4 days ago

I'm looking forward to this, but I'm skipping this trailer. I think they've revealed too much already.

The movie, which was supposed to be given a theatrical release back in September 2022, is now set to be released through the Max streaming service on October 3rd.

House Of Gucci star Jared Leto is in line to play Skeletor in the He-Man movie, Masters Of The Universe. More on the casting rumour here:

Kevin Smith's best film since Chasing Amy is a heartfelt ode to teenage love, summer movies, and the 1980s.

I was really taken in by the trailer and have high hopes for this one.

Wow. That was underwhelming. To be honest, my PS5 has been treated like a PS4 PRO PRO. Catching up on those old cheap PS4 games that had Pro patches. (I only have a base PS4). I mean TLOU2 looks great when patched for PS5 and I never understood why anyone would want the PS5 remaster because to my eyes there's very little difference.

Also, that price and no stand or drive. What were they thinking?

At the end of the day, whose going to spend £700 so that their games look a little bit better?

[–] UKFilmNerd@feddit.uk 3 points 6 days ago

It's a great film with a wonderful cast. The soundtrack is pretty fake good as well.

[–] UKFilmNerd@feddit.uk 2 points 1 week ago

100% agree. The reason I love the xenomorph is because it's so alien. A creature that has two beings in a single life form. Weird and strange.

I know it's Ridley's franchise but I didn't like the way he tried to create a backstory. I don't want it explained thank you, I'm happy enough that they're instinct driven killing machines.

[–] UKFilmNerd@feddit.uk 2 points 1 week ago

I thought this was about the really special editions. I think they're about $100 each. One contains a replica of a crystal shard, the other a clear crystal sphere.

Another disaster for Lionsgate and just three weeks after release.

[–] UKFilmNerd@feddit.uk 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Sadly, that comes at a cost. According to Amazon.com, directly converted, the 4K is about £30. Once you add tax and shipping fees, it rises to £45! That's a bit steep.

[–] UKFilmNerd@feddit.uk 3 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Another US title I would love to see get a release in the UK. Also, it's worth noting that all the extras are the same that have been reused since the DVD days. Only the scan of the 35mm camera negative is new.

Speaking on the Inspire Me! podcast (via World of Reel), Stallone revealed that his script is a working progress, adding that “I wrote a few pages of it and it just seems to write itself.”

The actor and filmmaker than said that his prequel would catch up with Robert ‘Rocky’ Balboa while he’s still a teenager. Stallone suggested we’d see “Adrian at 15, Rocky at 17, Paulie, moving to a new neighbourhood, Rocky’s a bad boy.”

The veteran action star also said his prequel was “almost like Lady And The Tramp but with real people” – a reference to the 1955 animated Disney film about the romantic relationship between two dogs.

A quick scan of the Internet tells us that Balboa was born in Philadelphia in June 1945, which means Stallone’s prequel would take place in 1962. The story would then presumably explore how he got into boxing, and show some of the bouts he fought in before the events of 1976’s Rocky.

Filming has begun on Vin Diesel’s fourth outing as Richard B. Riddick for the upcoming film “Riddick: Furya”.

On social media, the actor shared a pair of behind-the-scenes images from the first week of shooting – one with him in costume in a desert somewhere, the other in a dune buggy style vehicle crossing a desert.
