Why would people be eager to have a place like them joining the fedi? When Meta was first looking to add in threads there was a big push to tell every admin they need to proactively defederate from it. They may not be as notoriously bad as Meta when it comes to using and abusing the population, but it's still a commercial entity with the ability to do so and a will for profit.

She's spot on, there needs to be more than a mark every few years done.

She also acknowledges that one is way more dangerous than the other.

There are far too many here on Lemmy who play this role of the ultra lefty and claim they can't 'vote for genocide' and so push to vote 3rd party or disengage knowing full well that one possible outcome is a far worse result for everyone that matters to them.

Having your say is perfectly valid any day of the year, but running away the one day when you can make a direct impact not just on the presidential office but everything down to your local level says that all of the complaints the rest of the time where no more than theater.

They claim $100 B in 'losses' to this kind of game. Unless they're actually running red on their books what they really mean is 'we think we should make at least $100 B more per year'.

I'm sure that the vast majority of that would go directly to the front of house employees they're pinning this on too, definitely not to the execs and share holders...

There is a common debate on free speech in the US over of a platform should be punished for enforcing decorum on their users. Typically, it comes from the far right MAGA crowd griping when places kick them off for doing far right MAGA things, posting hateful content and persistently attacking anyone outside their bubble.

Hexbear is the tankie equivalent of something like 'truth social' or 'gab' who welcomes their type of extremists.

An individuals right to free speech does NOT meant an instance admin is compelled to amplify their message and help propagate it. This was argued over on every social media platform already and the only one to unban the extremists they banned in any quantity was after Elon took over Twitter.

This may be the most soft-slap low key form of war protest in history...

Actually I didn't specify when. The measure of if a wage is livable is going to vary greatly based on where you are of course. Around here one of the larger employers handing out 'just basic work' level jobs starts off at around $40K which is roughly a $10K increase over the last few years according to their persistent hiring sign and it's regarded locally as being decent pay.

Some very rough math would say that if you made $75K and took home say 60% of that after tax and insurance you would make about 3,750 a month. A rent or mortgage in the $1000-1500 space isn't too abnormal here leaving $2K+ for your other needs, utilities, food, etc

It's not a life of luxury level to be sure, but being someone who has gone from "milk to make mac & chz is a luxury" to actually having a few bits extra to buy some nice toys there is a cutoff out there where cash stops being the main stress in life. In my case it was somewhere around the point when I could just go buy a jug of milk without having to check if that was going to leave enough gas money for the rest of the week...

I'm assuming you mean they will be getting a lower portion of the increases? The chart you have here looks more like how many people fall in a given bracket.

It makes plenty of sense to shift things to greater gains on the lower end. A while back there was a study that said somewhere around $75K was the point at which actual income gains start to level off as far as what improvements it makes to your life. At that point you can probably pay your bills and afford to eat without stressing so much over every decision. I forget if that was for a single person or what, but for where I live it would be doable to be sure. Lower than that and you need that extra boost to just meet the basic needs.

Hey all,

So I'm looking to take an active step here to understand better some things that my straight/white/cis/middle-aged male brain has had a tough time wrapping itself around, particularly in the gender identity front.

I'm working from the understanding of physical sex as the bio-bits and the expressed identity as being separate things, so that part is easy enough.

What's confusing to me though is like this. If we take gender as being an expression of your persona, a set of traits that define one as male, female, or some combination of both then what function does a title/pronoun serve? To assume that some things are masculine or feminine traits seems to put unneeded rigidity to things.

We've had men or women who enjoy things traditionally associated with the other gender for as long as there have been people I expect. If that's the case then what purpose does the need for a gender title serve?

I'll admit personally questioning some things like fairness in cis/trans integrated sports, but that's outside what I'm asking here. Some things like bathroom laws are just society needing to get over itself in thinking our personal parts are all that special.

Certainly not trying to stir up any fights, just trying to get some input from people that have a different life experience than myself. Is it really as simple as a preferred title?

Edit: Just wanted to take a second to thank all the people here who took the time to write some truly extensive thoughts and explanations, even getting into some full on citation-laden studies into neurology that'll give me plenty to digest. You all have shown a great deal of patience with me updating some thinking from the bio/social teachings of 20+ years back. 🙂
