Something tasting nice isn't a good reason to subsidize a destructive industry.

There's less harmful and still great tasting alternatives.

Trees are nice, we should have more trees everywhere.
Planting trees isn't gonna solve the climate crisis and shouldn't be sold as a solution like it sometimes is.

Why would losing the empathy be the next step?

It's not just the eating behavior of others, it's needless killing of living beings purely for enjoyment, that's not something that should just be accepted.
