So, yes, the blockchain doesn’t make files smaller, but it could work to verify their authenticity, and that they have not been tampered with.

As with every other suggested use of blockchain, there are already better ways to verify contents. It's called hashing, it's been around for decades, and we do it all the time.

So instead of videos being hosted on 1 server, videos could be downloaded and made available by anyone to anyone at any time.

This is going to run into all kinds of bottlenecks. Individual users may have a fast enough Internet connection to stream HD video, but uploading is often much slower. Even if not, one user could only co-host maybe 1-2 other users. Also, ISPs sure aren't going to like all the increased bandwidth!

People always vastly underestimate the bandwidth requirements for smooth, streaming video.

Are you referring to the concept of capitalism?

So what, why does society care about two people getting into the same car together?

You clearly have an agenda in asking the question. There's no problem with that, but pretending you don't is... weird.

Apple would be a better custodian of Disney content than Disney themselves, at least.

Yeah, it's the old story of the immortal who refused to cross the street. The kind of risks that someone expecting to die by 80 would take are much different than risk assessment of someone expecting to live--comfortably, with their mind and body intact--to at least 160.

Another big vote for The Expanse. I always tell people to give the first season 3-4 episodes before judging. The main plot doesn't get started until around then and the full cast isn't even fully introduced after the first episode (IIRC). It's one of those shows that doesn't make it easy early on, but rewards those who stick through for the whole ride.

I think the personal drama is just fine in For All Mankind, but if you are looking only for the "science" part and not the "fiction" (i.e. stories about humans), I can see why it would be annoying or feel like it's taking valuable time away from what you are there to watch.

This is accurate! In practice it probably doesn't make much difference yet, as there are significantly fewer active instances for Kbin compared to Lemmy as a whole.

The other frustration with following battery/energy technology is that even if a big 'breakthroughs' does work out as expected, it takes 5-10 years to go from the lab to market, and that's on the optimistic side. During that development time, the energy demand consistently goes up every year, so by the time we actually get 'better batteries' we're also using more energy, resulting in a net change of "not much".

Social media platforms die in stages. That "niche group of techies" are a big part of why Twitter became what it did in the first place. It's not an insignificant group.

Twitter was never consistently profitable and these moves aren't helping, and there's definitely not going to be a savior investor after Musk. The real question is how long the company can survive, even if it remains popular in general, as that was already a big question before the ownership change.
