FAQ

I live in Nicaragua/Canada/Bahamas/USA, why are you posting on a Saturday?!

Because I'm writing this from Europe in the future where it's already Sunday. Timezones be crazy.

Why are there a bunch of non-board games in the board game list?

Because the Tabletop games category on Kickstarter includes anything remotely related to board games and sometimes things slip through my filters.

Why is this future award winning board game and literal saviour of humanity missing from your list?

Sometimes my filters get a bit overzealous and discard actually valid projects. If you feel something is missing for this reason, leave a comment and I'll add it (maybe).

Can I donate all my money to you?

No

Can you help me promote my game?

Please no. I make lists. Nothing more.

Your list is full of errors and now I got an ID-10t message!

Indeed, this fine piece of code runs purely on second-tier magic, so anything can happen. Leave a comment and I'll see what I can do.

Where is the table?

There is currently a bug in Kbin that breaks table formatting in posts. When this is fixed, I will start inlining tables again.

Ok, I'm feeling like an idiot, but what does enabling "Dynamic lists" in the settings panel actually do?

I've even tried reading the source code and I still don't understand what it does. It seems like it should have something to do with notifications, but in the end I'm just incredibly confused.

I feel that this has been a bit of an eye opening moment. It's nice to see that we at least don't have to worry about the risk of importing a toxic community, because evidently we are fully capable of producing that ourselves.

I had no doubt that that this is a controversial topic, but the fact that we as a community aren't even capable of having a civil discussion about it actually saddens me a bit (I'm not just referring to the comment I'm replying to).

[–] Perry@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

That's literally the opposite what I'm saying.

[–] Perry@kbin.social 12 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

I think many people here are immensely overestimating the value of the Fediverse user base. The entire active Fediverse, let alone individual instances, is barely a rounding error for Meta.

There is no if or when Threads become the biggest instance, Threads apparently got 10 million users in 7 hours. The whole of Mastodon has ~9 million users in total. By now, Threads alone is likely bigger than the entire Fediverse combined, which mind you is something like >99% bots and inactive users.

Even if every single instance defederates from Meta, their fork of ActivityPub would by far be the most significant one by not a small margin.

[–] Perry@kbin.social 14 points 1 year ago (10 children)

Meta federating would be the best thing to ever happen to the Fediverse. Face it, Fediverse is not by its own in a billion years going to somehow kill off Meta. The vast, vast majority of users are going to stay with traditional social media, there’s nothing we can do about that.

However, Meta et al actually joining the Fediverse means we won. The vast majority will still stay with Meta’s services, but no one here has to. This is the closest we will ever get to a truly open standard for social media.

I don’t want to have an account with Meta or Twitter or whatever, but I, like most people, want to be able to communicate with the people who do.

As I see it, there are only two ways forward for the Fediverse:

  1. Traditional SoMe stays closed and inaccessible for anyone who doesn’t want to sell their soul to Meta. The vast majority of people still use traditional SoMe and the Fediverse stays a minuscule hobby project at best. Even here, most people will probably also have accounts on the traditional platforms in order to not cut oneself off from the world.

  2. Traditional SoMe embraces open standards and anyone who cares can choose to use whatever service they want. The vast majority of people still use traditional SoMe, but the Fediverse now has access to billions of people (or not, you can choose yourself) without having to become a commodity that Meta can sell to advertisers.

Ideally, instead of having to register a Meta account, I can just stay with Kbin.social without losing access to the content.

For clarity: This relates explicitly to UA not GA4. That doesn’t however mean that the current version is deemed GDPR compliant; that is likely something that a future investigation will decide.

Google claims that GA4 should be compliant, but at the same time they have also for years until a few days ago been providing a version of GA that wasn’t.

Not necessarily destabilised, but Sweden has deliberately opted not to join the European Exchange Rate Mechanism which purpose is to stabilise currency exchange rates.

Sweden is by law bound to adopt the Euro, but by choosing not to join the ERM II, Sweden by extension can't join the Euro because they technically don't fulfil the requirements.

This is of course a simple loophole that could be closed by the EU, but there hasn't really been much political will to do anything about it.

Yeah it’s always a project to get new people started with Mumble. It doesn’t feel like it should be so difficult, but people always struggle.

Ironically, I struggled immensely with forcing Discord to stop messing with my system audio settings, which is apparently something apps are allowed to do in Windows.

[–] Perry@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

So imagine that you have a lemon tree that grows the finest lemons in the neighbourhood. You know that with those lemons you could make the meanest lemonade and make a ton of money selling that. The problem is that in order to do that, you need to buy a juice press, a bunch of sugar and maybe throw together a dashing lemonade stand that will draw attention to your business.

The issue is that you don't have any money to buy those things and even if you know you will get rich down the line, the whole project is a dud if you can't even build your lemonade stand.

Enter Mr. Money Bag. I have a whole €1,000 just sitting there in my wallet not doing anything. I would really like that many to become bigger so I look for a way to do that. I have however seen your lemon tree and the awesome lemons it produces. With those lemons I absolutely believe that you can make the greatest lemonade the world have ever seen and I believe the only thing you need to do that is more money.

So I agree to give you those €1,000 in order to build your lemonade stand and in return I will take some of the money that you make from selling the lemonade. It will however take a few weeks for you to do that and until that is done the materials will probably cost more than what you're making from the lemonade.

That's OK for me, though. I wasn't doing anything with that money anyway and as long as I trust that you can still make a bunch of money when it's finished, I'm fine with it. In fact, I decide to give you another €100 to put up a sign in order for more people to find your business quicker.

So everything is tugging along and now you're actually making more money than you spend, so you give me an amazing €1.200; €100 more than I spent! You also get some money, which is awesome because now you can buy yourself that rocking NiN T-shirt you've always wanted. Now this is great, except I still don't actually need that money, not right now at least. So I tell you to keep that money in the company and build an additional even better lemonade stand which will make us twice the amount of money in a few weeks.

Currently, your company haven't made a single cent, but that's fine because your business is sound and everything is tugging along exactly as planned.

Eventually, I decide that I actually want to buy a new high end TV so I actually need some money that I can spend right now. I know that in about ten weeks this company will have made at least €20,000 that it can either invest in further expansion or give back to the owners. So I go to my buddies Greg and Lisa who definitely have that amount of money and tell them that they can buy this company for €20,000. Greg also owns a carpentry which he can use for building even more lemonade stands and Lisa is really good at making signs so with them the company might even make €40,000 in the same time.

So Greg and Lisa together buy my part of the company for €20,000. I get to watch Eurovision on my new 70 inch TV, and Greg and Lisa will together make €40,000 in a few weeks so everyone is happy.

Then after a few months, someone realises that your lemon tree can really only grow a basket of lemons a year and you can't actually grow enough to make the money you hoped for. Everybody panics, the company's value plummets and eventually closes down.

Greg and Lisa are mad because they didn't make the money they hoped for (they did however get back €5,000 from selling the lemonade stands to a neighbor who was about to start an apple juice business). You're also disappointed, but at least you still have your NiN t-shirt. Your gardener goes to jail for some reason, though.

Will the test instances be publicly available?

That would be greatly appreciated by us over at /m/kbinStyles so that it’s possible to see that everything still works before the new version goes live.

Obviously not exactly high priority, but I thought it was worth asking anyway.

[–] Perry@kbin.social 6 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

It seems like the formatting kinda works. On Lemmy it looks alright to me, while on Kbin the columns are a bit squished, but otherwise it appears to hold together. I'll see if I can refine it a bit next week.

Edit: Oof, Kbin really doesn’t handle tables well on mobile. At least it looks alright on Lemmy.

What is this?

This is a weekly crowdfunding roundup of new projects launched last week and projects that end the coming week.

This week I'm experimenting with inlining the tables like I've previously done with the Reddit posts. We'll see how it works out. If it doesn't work, then the lists are also available as a linked Google Docs.

Honestly, I would probably be using both, in that case. The Threadiverse feels a lot like the early days of Reddit and I would love to be part of it and see it grow up. Assuming this keeps expanding, it's too late for me to go back to exclusively using Reddit at this point. Giga brain Mr. Huffman made sure of that.

However, there are numerous great communities at Reddit that haven't found a place here yet. Especially many of the smaller subs that were already very niche as it is, and that one probably won't not find anywhere else anytime soon.

I'm already regularly using multiple different sites as it is. Both larger international ones, as well as smaller local blogs and forums. I don't personally see an issue by itself to keep both Reddit and Kbin on that list.

Hopefully, we will see entirely new communities pop up and grow in the Threadiverse. That is, communities that aren't just different flavours of "Reddit sucks". Not saying it's not entertaining, but I think we need to broaden the scope a bit going forward. :)

As long as it's not literally a toggle that you can interact with.

I can only imagine the horrors of accidentally clicking in the editor while selecting some text and quietly changing certificateIsValid = false; to true or something like that.

Awesome! Glad it worked.

Cephalofair Games has just launched their new crowdfunding campaign on Backerkit.

It’s essentially three different projects bundled into the same campaign:

  • The 2nd edition of Gloomhaven
  • Different sets of miniatures for the enemies and summons in Gloomhaven+expansion, JotL and Frosthaven
  • A new Gloomhaven themed RPG.

What is this?

This is a roundup of new crowdfunding projects launched last week, as well as projects that end the coming week. I have previously posted these lists on /r/boardgames, but I wanted to offer this as an alternative format for those who don't want to use Reddit.

Note that I'm still experimenting with what platforms and formats I'm going to use. I will at least be posting these on Mastodon and Discord on a regular basis for the time being.

This week I'm however also playing around with Lemmy/Kbin, so I'll see how it goes.

So after a few days of lurking Kbin and trying to understand the marvelous world of the Fediverse, I've tried keep some mental notes of the struggles I've had and some spontaneous areas of improvement that I personally would like to see.

Nevertheless, I think even in these very early stages there is great potential in Kbin and the Fediverse as a whole, and it will be fun to follow along and see how this develops.

Terminology
From the point of view of a Reddit user, I do of course understand that Kbin is its own thing and Reddit isn't exactly the golden standard, but I do however find a lot of the Kbin specific lingo to be very confusing and sometimes rather inconsistent.

So looking at the top menu, you have Threads, Microblog, People and Magazines. Threads and Microblog are both actually part of a Magazine which is essentially the same thing as a community or a subreddit. However, you don't actually post threads to the Magazine; you post Articles. If I understand is correctly, there actually is no such thing as a Thread in Kbin.

An Article is however also not actually a link to an article, but rather a text post onto Kbin itself, i.e. a selfpost in Reddit lingo. To post an article, one has to post a Link, which is functionally identical to an Article except it also features an URL to an article. Both a Link and an Article can also include an image, but it's also possible to post a Photo, which is similar to a Link or Article, except it doesn't include a text body field.

There is also an option to post a Video, but that doesn't seem to work at the moment.

All of the above post types also feature Tags and Badges. I honestly don't understand what those are for.

You can also select whether the post is NSFW or OC (which I assume means Original Content), which are pretty self explanatory, albeit arguably a bit redundant for an Article which I would assume is inherently OC by itself.

However, posting any of these types is not the same thing as posting a Post, which actually means posting a microblog entry. A Post is similar to an Article, except there is no title, tags or badges and unlike an Article, a Post has no option to specify whether it's original content or not.

I assume that a microblog Post has a limited number of allowed characters, but I can't see that being specified anywhere.

So naturally I find all of this very confusing as a new user. Kbin uses a lot its own unique terminology and lingo, that honestly isn't completely self explanatory. The main issue is however that this lingo is also never really explained anywhere. As a new user, one has to essentially guess how things fit together and after several days I still don't really understand a lot of things.

My suggestion is to at least add more tooltips, placeholders and descriptions, explaining what each thing actually does and how one is supposed to interact with it.

Even better would be to add some proper onboarding steps, guiding the user through the ins and out of Kbin and the Fediverse and how one actually gets started using it.

If it isn't already set in stone, I would however personally suggest also changing some of the terminology to make it more understandable, but that might just be me.

Navigational structure
Again, this might absolutely be a matter of getting used to a different site, but I still struggle grasping the overall user flow throughout the site.

Clicking on Threads I get a list of all Articles, Links, Photos and Videos posted in all Magazines that are part of the Kbin network (both local and external). I can then click on Microblog to see the same things but for Posts.

So far so good, except I am inherently uninterested in seeing an uncurated mountain of softcore porn mixed with German travel tips, so I try to switch showing only Magazines I'm subscribed to. That is however not a setting, but a completely different part of the site /sub which I get redirected to.

If I now click on an Article or Post, it opens so that I can read it. However, I am now no longer on /sub, which means that if I go back to the feed, I'm back to seeing everything again.

Similarly, I can click on a Magazine to see all Articles posted there. I can then click Microblog to see all Posts, and I can click on People to see... People related to the Magazine (I don't really understand what I'm seeing).

I can freely navigate back and fourth between these top level navigation links without leaving the Magazine. However, clicking on Magazines will take me to a some kind of sorted list of different Magazines. Even though it's on the same structural level in the navigation, I am now on completely different part of the site and clicking on the different links in the navigation will take me back to the frontpage of the respective area, not the Magazine I was on previously.

On the topic of Magazines, there is also no easy way to actually list the Magazines you're subscribed to. As far as I know, the only way is to go to Profile -> Settings -> Subscriptions, which isn't exactly streamlined for something I would argue should be one of the most important core functionalities.

General usability
So this one might be a bit silly, since of course things will improve going forward, but I thought I'd include it anyway.

You can see in the feed whether a certain entry is an Article, Link or Photo by the small icon in the lower left. You can click on the photo icon to show the photo inline without opening the article, but clicking the Article icon does nothing. Links don't have an icon at all, making it rather confusing whether an entry is an Article on the Fediverse or if it's a link to an external site.

Presumably, all types should have an icon and clicking on the icon should show text body as well as the photo if available.

Furthermore, clicking on the actual image preview navigates to the article itself, while then clicking on the same preview in the article opens a modal with the full photo. Clicking on the title leads to opening the URL of the photo itself, which I fail to understand why I would ever want to do.

Looking at the comment thread, typically the first thing I want to do is to be able to comment on the article. The comment box is however located way down at the bottom of the page, forcing the user the user to scroll for ages before being able to interact with the article. It would be much better if it was located at the top.

Being able to collapse comment threads would also be much appreciated and also auto collapsing low quality comments, like how Reddit does it.

I'm assuming there is a technical reason for this, but paginating comments appears a bit bulky and dated from a modern web design perspective. It makes it very difficult to follow long discussions and also effectively makes new comments invisible when they get put on page 3+.

Infinite scroll or an option to load additional comments, would be much preferable. Increasing the page size would also be a great improvement if possible.

Lastly, writing this, I would love to see some improvements to the post interface overall. I don't understand why the body text box is significantly narrower than the resulting article and without a preview option it's very difficult to layout the article properly.

I'm unfamiliar with what limitations there might be in ActivityPub, but I feel that some more formatting options would be a great additions. Headers, sub- and superscript and tables are some of the things that I really miss. Optimally, I would like to see even more advanced formatting and layouting options, but one step at a time, I guess. :)

Final words

So that's the end of this surprisingly gigantic novel of a post. I hope I don't come off as just whiny since I do absolutely appreciate what you have done so far and really hope that this becomes as successful as it has the potential to be.

I would love to hear what other have to say about my thoughts and suggestions. Is it complete nonsense or does it have some validity?
