I don't know why, but the big bang does not sit well with me. Not from any scientifically informed perspective, it doesn't seem right to have something that finite.

That's awesome. I too built one with the same grating, a raspberry pi camera, pelican case, and raspberry pi. I want to redo it sometime with 3d printed parts. I was able to get spectra of a bunch of sources. I'll post some pics here when I get back from vacay!
