Holy crap. I remember the "Free Mitnick!" campaign.

Edit: Clearly @Hellsadvocate thinks Mitnick deserves what he got.

I've been "permabanned" from Reddit eight or so times, with all but the most recent one contested and reversed. Short story: I pissed off a certain turtle, and he made sure to report me for inciting violence every chance he got, which, best I can tell, is a preemptive ban regardless of post content. With this latest one, though, I'm done; I'm not even fighting it. I needed a good kick in the ass to get off of Reddit, and this is it.

I was just thinking this morning how much this platform reminds me of Usenet, at least in its cross-server "fediverse." I remember waiting days sometimes for different Usenet servers to sync up so I could get replies to shit I posted a week ago. The lag may not be as drastic with Mastodon/Lemmy/Kbin/whatever, but it's the same basic concept.

None of this, though, makes me nostalgic for the days of newsgroups. That shit was a hot mess, and I'm frankly glad it's effectively gone the way of gopher.

I would argue that your average person was probably already paying for Netflix if there was something there they wanted. The password sharing clique is a specific breed of leecher that is 100% at home with using a VPN and a torrent server.

I could always be wrong, but that's my suspicion. It will be fun to watch, either way.

Pretty much just this. Well, and LinkedIn, but I don't post personal stuff over there. I moved from Facebook to Reddit about eight or nine years ago, and with Reddit circling the drain, am currently rudderless. Tried this Mastodon thing when it first got popular a few years ago and had no good experiences with it; this time around seems to be different with all the fresh blood. Just hope it keeps on keepin' on .

Short-term gains at the expense of long-term retention. Sounds like they're looking to sell.

I've been all about these things since we first started talking about them, but whatever that is is bullshit. It doesn't have nearly enough connection points, and the ones it does have are secured by velcro. If the workers are feeling anything, and that's a big "if," then it's purely placebo.

Edit: Clearly @Hellsadvocate thinks tricking folks is the way of the future.

Sounds like they'll be bringing turtle, everyone's favorite boot-licker, back with gusto. Good riddance.

Edit: Clearly @Hellsadvocate is your average turtle fan. Explains a lot, in hindsight.

If their sale to Microsoft goes through, you can bet on it. I give M$ a lot of shit, and deservedly so, but their history of buying game companies and turning them into professional outfits is established.

Just the unofficial patch and some player homes that I haven't gone to see yet. Still building settlements, and loving it.
