The database began with In the Dark’s reporting on the killings of civilians in Haditha, Iraq, on November 19, 2005. That morning, a squad of Marines, led by Sergeant Frank Wuterich, was hit by an improvised explosive device, which killed a beloved lance corporal. In the hours that followed, Marines killed men, women, and children on the street and in nearby houses. Four of those Marines, including Wuterich, were charged with murder. Three of their cases were later thrown out, and, when Wuterich went to trial, he was allowed to plead guilty to a single count of negligent dereliction of duty. A judge demoted Wuterich in rank. “Essentially a parking ticket,” Wuterich’s lawyer, Haytham Faraj, said of the sentence. “It’s meaningless.”

Comfort maybe, def not junk:

Your local library probably has a subscription to the first, maybe even to the $econd. Granta's a quarterly and I can't say I've ever seen it in a library but its been around a long time and back issues are readily available @used bookstores.

As an American of (partial) Nordic descent, I've always been proud of my link to those "more civilized" countries of the region. It's shocking now to read what's going on in Finland with its Nazi infestation, one that (apparently) reaches into the highest levels of government.

Their local community college is about to lose accreditation (from the NWCCU) because the school's board is controlled by right-wing nut-jobs:

The NWCCU investigation team found that donors pulled back more than $4 million in pledges and major gifts. Last December, credit rating agency Moody's lowered NIC's bond rating, which may make it more expensive for the school to take out loans.

In an e-mail exchange with a student, Banducci painted himself as an adversary fighting “liberal progressives” that were “deeply entrenched.” In the same e-mail, Banducci said he was “battling the NIC deep state."

You read that right, the old community college deep state.

And now they're importing this kind of QAnon lunacy into the public secondary school system. Those kids just don't stand a chance.

After frequent legal debate, public outbursts and rescinded motions, the West Bonner County School District has a new superintendent without experience as a teacher or school administrator.

Durst, a former Idaho Freedom Foundation staffer, has drawn criticism from some who believe he is not qualified to take the district’s top position.

Durst has expressed controversial views, including advocating for public schools competing with private schools for taxpayer funding and expressing support for publicly funded religious schools. He’s also warned of teaching critical race theory, a common conservative rallying cry despite how rarely such curriculum is taught.

Durst’s annual salary will be $105,000.
