Ngl I'm not huge on cats but seeing that while studying would've been a really nice break and would help lighten the load

[–] SnugZebras@lemmy.blahaj.zone 16 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Why are you not huge on cats? Have you not owned one?

[–] MindTraveller@lemmy.ca 4 points 5 months ago (5 children)

They're bad for the environment if they get out of the house, and a lot of people have made fair arguments that they're not actually a domesticated animal.

[–] sukhmel@programming.dev 22 points 5 months ago (2 children)

if they get out of the house

Well, the solution is to not let them get out

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 18 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Well taken care of indoor cats live longer and healthier lives anyway 🤷

[–] lud@lemm.ee 1 points 5 months ago

It's debatable if the cats live happier lives though.

Our cat is pretty much depressed during winter because she can't (Well she can if she wants but it's cold and snowy 🤷) go out. When it's summer she seems way happier because she can run around outside.

She is also less annoying during the summer because during winter she constantly meows because she has nothing to do.

But how can you proofread your manuscripts without one?

[–] A_Chilean_Cyborg@feddit.cl 9 points 5 months ago

and a lot of people have made fair arguments that they're not actually a domesticated animal.

Yeah and that makes them even better.

[–] pyre@lemmy.world 6 points 5 months ago (2 children)

they are the environment. we're bad for the environment.

[–] Slovene@feddit.nl 8 points 5 months ago

We should be towed beyond the environment.

There are dozens of felines native to the Americas

[–] businessfish@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 5 months ago

i understand the sentiment but the "cats are bad for the environment" thing is mostly about how the human practice of keeping and breeding cats has made more cats than are good for the environment and placed them basically everywhere.

like yeah there are native cats but also we have a shit ton of cats brought and/or bred by humans that nature is not equipped to handle

[–] hydroxycotton@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Care to elaborate on your second point? Like why/how is that an issue?

[–] streetfestival@lemmy.ca 24 points 5 months ago (1 children)

The first pic looks like a mug shot. "Proofreading the manuscript" is pretty funny. It seems a little odd that the cats' names aren't also included

[–] RecluseRamble@lemmy.dbzer0.com 28 points 5 months ago

That's their names: first cat, second cat... He's a math book author after all.

Meh, that's nothing; J. H. Hetherington listed his cat, Chester, as a co-author on several papers (and even as the sole author of one of them).

Advanced rubber duck debugging

[–] intensely_human@lemm.ee 12 points 5 months ago (2 children)

An especially judgy looking cat

[–] Snowpix@lemmy.ca 2 points 5 months ago

He knows what you did.

[–] HootinNHollerin@lemmy.world 1 points 5 months ago

The cat actually understands partial differential equations and therefore just judges the rest of us
