Which isn't to say that name brands are all that great to begin with, just that most generics aren't any worse

That’s going to depend on where they are made. There’s a lot of poor quality and adulteration in pharmaceuticals these days.

Are you thinking of supplements? There’s a difference between FDA-approved pharmaceuticals and non-FDA-regulated supplements.
