If you care to, you might try posting this to !fucksubscriptions@lemmy.world because: 1) yet another item that you pay money for that tries to force you to subscribe to things to have access to all of its features 2) maybe somebody bought one, is a member of that community, and figured out a way to crack it because they were as irritated as you might be (I'd be irritated, I probably would not buy it if I knew it required a subscription to get those extra features).

Reading the description, it does appear to regularly require internet connectivity. It says the purchase comes with a dataset of known locations and regularly gets updated.
If anything, the crack would have to be somehow getting it to use a different dataset, one that I don't know if it even exists offhand (ie some open sourced red light/speed trap dataset). And that dataset would need to be in the same format as Cyclops.
You could use Waze? Don't need the navigation running, just open the app and let it stay running
Might want to look to using something else. Google is going to likely kill Waze next year since their marketing team was all cut
But Waze is still very active around me :( I hope it doesn't get killed
I know reporting already is a thing in Google maps but it's not as active as waze is
Waze via CarPlay is an actual hellscape.
I do, android auto turns on waze automatically. I am just curious if this camera feature has been cracked
How are you supposed to use Waze without having the phone in your hands? Picking up a phone while driving is illegal in my state.
Mount the phone and start up Waze before you set off
windscreen mount or android auto/carplay?
Hands free dash mount?
If the camera can stay offline, is something preventing you from buying the subscription, activating it, and refunding it/paying only 1 month then never putting the camera online again?
I don't think it is that easy. I'd say you might be able to use it for 1 month then. The key probably has a validity.
Yep, it also has GPS so I don't think faking the date/time of the device will have an effect.
Fair enough, but the clock on any device not connected to the internet can't be trusted ;)
That means your footage would have invalid date/time stamps, making it useless when you need it for its intended purpose.
GPS is a pretty accurate time source.
