It didn't rip open, it's easy access.
Easy access in or out?
Yes.
))<>((
When the bloodletting and leeches haven’t worked it’s a quick bake to kill the demons
Yes, It is MRI... Man Roughly Incinerated.
The thing on the head being in front of the opening as opposed to in it is really bothering me
Edit: the more I look at this, the more ridiculous it gets. That man went and ripped his pants. Also, am I the only one that sees Steve Buscemi?
The two figures in the back also have the circles around their head, and the one on the poor fella is clipping his hair. I'm going to assume this is not original
Edit 2: I can't stop staring. The wooden legs don't match (I can't see any way of them being angled the same), and apparently if you take those skinny ass shoes off you get big toes the whole way down. Also, where are his nipples? My man in red has his chin behind his shoulder. Some sort of cremortionist
(IMPOSSIBLE)
Big bonus points to anyone who legit updates that Wiki caption
Holy human pizza.
Have we explored the idea that they are pulling him out of the oven?
The martyrium of St.Veit, Museum Belvedere, Austria.
The thing on the head
It's a halo. Are people unaware of what halos are?
They get depicted pretty differently in old art than they do in pop culture.
This style of halos appear a lot in stained glass windows and those are in movies and tv shows often enough that most people have probably seen some.
That's quite the assumption
It's also in the opening scene of Monty Python's Life of Brian
Yes, I am unaware that the solid object matching the wall was a halo. I had already thought of that but I have never seen one drawn in this way
Edit: Looks like using the wall texture as a halo was in fact a thing
cremortionist hath slain me.
can't unsee the circle thing
I can't figure out what it is. It matches the wall the other two are against
It's a halo. He is a saint in Christianity.
Of course, the old solid wood halos!
Originally halos depicted either a disk or escaping rays of light surrounding the head of the "holy person" in question, so people know who the good guy was and you're not supposed to cheer for the cremation or whatever.
Thank you for the explanation! Today I learned
And this is how they invented pizza. True story.
No pineapples in sight. Fake.

Not to be too mean to medieval artists, since they're much better at art than I am, but why do they always have such weird-ass anatomy? Would it have been that difficult to have someone pose for reference?
You'll need to find an extended explanation on your own but in essence - religion. The focus is on symbolism, and not on realism as it diverts attention and doesn't help you describe scenes from the bible.
I remember seeing some examples of paintings made by the same artists for secular and religious purposes, and the secular ones were realistic. But it's been quite a few years ago and the only thing I remember is that they might have been Italian painters working in the Eastern Roman empire that were recognised due to the messed up alphabet.

It's meant to be viewed at a distance. :)
Reverse perspective is more about symbolism than distance AFAIK
Still doesn't explain red guy's contorted limbs and head, though.
You know how there are scenes in books or movies that make no sense in real life, but explain the story? Same principle
But the scene would tell the same story if he were anatomically correct. I guess I just don't understand medieval thinking.
Well it wouldn't really if you couldn't see his face and halo because they're in the furnace, or if his hands weren't obviously in prayer due to the angle.
Oven guy isn't really the one that stands out as weird, it's red guy.
Hmmm he looks like an owl in order to show his emotions for the martyr? I legit didn't even see his face before you mentioned it, my brain must be going medieval.
It's his contorted neck and legs, they look...off.
The artist had a model. but he moved too much in this scene and they didn't find another one willing afterwards.
“Alright you’re going to hear some loud noises. It’s completely normal. They might sound like someone screaming in pain. All normal, try to relax.”
There will be cake afterward.
Poor bloke

I just assumed that's where we were
What are thooose
A religious painting about one religious (an apostel maybe, or similar) being killed.
Only one way to find out.
