Politicians banning a political statement? Is it just me, or does that just sound really weird? Isn't it their job to be political and do politicy things?

Ok, that is just a joke, but the act of banning a political statement is just as powerful as the original action itself. How and why that is, is subject to debate regardless if you are for or against either side.

My personal opinion is that there are much more important things to worry about than symbols.

Disclaimer: I am not Canadian. While I have been tempted to jump the boarder more than a few times, I'll spare y'all the annoyance. (I do like this instance too, btw.)

The idea is that the legislature is meant to be where laws are debated, and it would be an abuse of that platform to use it to make an unrelated political statement. Same reason we wouldn't want our politicians to be able to wear a "vote for Trudeau" shirt in the legislature. It's just inappropriate for the setting. Parliamentary decorum is important because we want things to stay on topic and not devolve into side debates.

On the other hand, the only reason this is being debated is because someone chose to make it debatable. People wear the poppy or not, the various ribbons or not, all without comment or concern. All they had to do to keep it from being distracting was to ignore it. Hell, they could have even acknowledged it and moved on without distracting from any other business.
