The most important part of getting into hammocking is the ridgeline. Everything else is pretty much optional or interchangeable. But a proper set ridgeline will ensure consistent hangs in various locations. I'd recommend watching Shug's videos on YouTube on how to set one up.

You know, that’s not the answer I would have come up with first on my own, but it’s a great answer.

Well thank you! I've played with a couple different hammocks and suspension methods and shit but I find consistently the ridgeline to be the most important and everything else is just for convenience. I really like my whoopie slings but hanging with carabiners is essentially just as easy. Take away my ridgeline though and a 2 minute setup becomes 15 minutes of fucking with it and then realizing in the middle of the night that I'm still uncomfortable lol.

I've been meaning to set up a ridgeline, but most of my hangs are just a few hours at a time near the beach or something, and I wouldn't want the ridge in my way.

I've only hammock camped twice, and only one was a proper setup. But I'm going backpacking next week, and I think I'm gonna set up a ridgeline before I go, so it's one less thing to worry about

I usually don't find it cumbersome for my short hangs.

I did end up setting up a ridgeline for my trip and it was a game changer.

It makes setting up so much easier. Just get your height correct and everything else falls into place! Hope the trip was fun!

My best hammock camping meal... Hobo dinners, but add half a can of Campbell's cream of "what ever you like best" to it and Lowry's seasoning. It's a game changer.

Ooooh, that sounds way better than one of those “pour boiling water into this pouch and wait 5 minutes” meals.

I'm pretty fond of my portable hammock stand made from extendable paint poles. It's something I leave in the back of my truck, so I can hang anywhere I am. It's nice when camping in places where hanging from trees isn't allowed, or there are no trees at all. It really opens up the opportunities on road trips.

That sounds awesome. Do you have a pic you can share?

It's a tensahedron stand that needs a single anchor to support itself. I normally use the hitch on my truck, but have tied to exposed roots, fence posts, door jambs, large rocks, etc...

Holy crap! I never would've thought of this. I'm gonna build one immediately
