'Is it not' is the proper syntax.

I hope I've been informative.

[–] Robdor@lemmy.world 59 points 1 year ago

'Is itn't' for the second option.

there are many right ways to make a meme, but this is not it

[–] mvirts@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago (2 children)

There are many ways to comment, ain't there

[–] w2tpmf@lemmy.world 23 points 1 year ago

I saw a smart meme today. This is not it.

[–] TheDankHold@kbin.social 17 points 1 year ago

When it comes to doing this right, this is not it.

[–] bane_killgrind@lemmy.ml 12 points 1 year ago

"is it" is the whole verb, and "is it not" the unabridged reciprocal or whatever the term is.

[–] Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 1 year ago

It's spelt innit

Or at least that's what it sounds like when I say it

[–] BananaPeal@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 year ago (2 children)

You can, it just sounds wrong because we don't.

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 17 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

It doesn't even sound wrong. It is something people use. Just not as often.

"Is this the thing you're looking for?"

"That is not it."

That isn't it That is not it it

That isn't it That is not it it

[–] Openmindedskeptic@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That's because people got their words all mixed up. Back in the day, "is not it" would absolutely be the normal way to phrase "isn't it."

It sounds weird today of course.

[–] idiomaddict@feddit.de 2 points 1 year ago

I know this is a really old post, but “is it not” is also the formulation in other Germanic languages, so we can assume that it was the same formulation in old Germanic.

[–] hiyaaaaa23@kbin.social 7 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Why won’t this work => why will not this work

[–] fushuan@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Why will this not work.

Your sentence reads super wrong to me.

[–] timmytbt@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 year ago

The contraction is “will not”

[–] timmytbt@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago

Try it Shakespearean 🤣

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 6 points 1 year ago

"That is not it, isn't it?"

[–] CarbonIceDragon@pawb.social 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I've definitely seen "is not it" used before, usually in the context of things like speeches or rhetoric where someone has considered what to say beforehand and wants to keep a sense of formality. Generally it'll be part of a rhetorical question, like "Is not it better to be x than be y?"

There is a fairly common way to use the phrase, but that is not it.
