Can't Sleep Gang checking in here.

Right here. Have to move the mattress to the loungeroom if I want any sleep. This house has no insulation. You turn the aircon off and the house goes back to hot as fuck in 15 minutes.

Yep. Also, no kitty, me being up at 3am does not make it breakfast time.

Awake in the heat last night, I remembered I had that astro setting on my phone.

And it makes a little time-lapse!..... https://streamable.com/b1htt0

What my family calls Gran's Grapes. She is actually my Great Gran. Before she passed away, she had lived in Thornbury since the 30s, and had this vine growing on her fence that had grapes, so delicious. After she passed, my uncle grabbed clippings and started growing them up at his house in Doreen. They've been thriving lately.

Yesterday, he gave us each a bag of grapes from those vines. Each bag is like a good 1kg, and he has 7. Said he has more at home still too.

They are the most delicious grapes I've ever had, nothing at the shops has come close. We are still trying to work out what type they are, but honestly I'm just glad to have some. They remind me of Gran.

For those without aircon:

β€’ put on a wet tshirt. For maximum effect sit in front of a fan.

β€’ open all the windows and blinds overnight. It’s supposed to be 24 overnight, so you want to get your house to that temp before the next day starts. Close it all up again in the morning

Source: grew up without aircon.

Can confirm wet shirt or bandana helps. I went a long time with no cooling

My peace lilly is upset and needs to be watered. Pretty sure I watered them yesterday though.

~~peace~~ this means war lilly

Power outlet next to the sink has shorted and keeps popping and smoking when the mains is turned on. The real estate agent's emergency electrical line won't fix it till Thursday and all other electricians called won't fix it despite us willing to pay it because we don't own the property. There's no fire extinguisher or ground fault protection so I really can't risk playing with the outlet.

I actually love how I can't get an electrician because I am a renter this is ridiculous. I'm all out of options besides either, calling more electricians until one agrees to do it, or start a fire because I want the fan on ;-;

Anyone have an suggestions?

Edit: After much electrician shopping, someone was found to do it. If something goes wrong we've been assured that we'll have to answer for it

This would, imo, classify as an urgent repair. tenantsvic.org.au says:

Urgent repairs need to be done as soon as possible. If they are not done urgently you can apply to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT). It will hear your application within 2 business days. If any repairs needed are not urgent the rental provider has 14 days to get them done.

IDK if I would classify Thursday as "urgently", but VCAT won't look at anything you send them until Tuesday or Wednesday.

I'm sorry, it sucks to be a renter, I know.

Edit: https://tenantsvic.org.au/advice/common-problems/repairs/

The link to the repairs page, worth a read

Flat is 30 degrees. Lowest it gets tonight is 27. Therefore, flat will reach equilibrium with outside tomorrow.

What's the point of paying this much for a rental if it can't keep the fucking heat out?

[–] TinyBreak@aussie.zone 9 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago) (3 children)

Still 31 outside. I’m using 0.4kw/h running the ac. Sun rise is 7:11am, so 8 am to producing any meaningful power. So 3.2kw to buy power overnight to run the….. fuckit I’m leaving the AC on!

Update:

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGGFGGGGGHGGHHHH

Sincerely, all the rentals that lack aircon.

I have Aircon and even im feeling a bit washed out and tired this afternoon. God help you and folks like you without Aircon, and we've still got another day of this!

Still, I remember not having Aircon growing up in hotter parts of Victoria and I haven't forgotten. At this point I'd look into taking alternative measures like putting towels in the freezer, putting big ice blocks in front of fans and so on.

I've popped some cheap cool foods up in Food Australia :(

Promised my kid an early morning beach visit tomorrow. Can't say I'm overly excited about it but it still should be nice to dip my toes around 7am. An hour or 2 then home to AC.

Feeling a little caged at the moment with this heat.

[–] neurospice@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 8 months ago (3 children)

Tonight's going to be delightful. There's no wind to blow cool air and my place is chilling at 34.3 with no power. Electrical work has been rescheduled to tomorrow morning so my food has/will spoil. I have to do laundry and get scripts done tonight. I've blown the budget on a cold drinks only woolies order for tomorrow, hopefully I'll have power by then πŸ˜‚πŸ˜

Currently about to watch Dune 2. Through various means I've managed to avoid ads in my life but fuck me when I see them at the cinema they are so fucking grating!

[–] Dalek_Thal@aussie.zone 8 points 8 months ago

Theeeeeerrrmaaaaaalllll equiiiiiiiiiillllllllllliiiiiiBBBBRIIIIIUUUUUMMM!

I wonder, will the flat get below 27 this evening, or will it still be in the high 20s when we close up again in the morning?

[–] Gibsonisafluffybutt@aussie.zone 8 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago) (4 children)

Im considering a walk around the block to get some air but it's so oppressive

Edit: It wasn't worth it. I sheepishly came back home and sat on the couch.

[–] bacon@aussie.zone 6 points 8 months ago

I too am getting cabin fever

Anyone else feeling shit? We’ve got ac and I doubt the place has exceeded 26 degrees. Only very limited errands out of the house but I’m just flat as heck, needed naps to get through the days. Smashing the waters but just ended up peeing it all out seemingly.

Crashing on the couch under coloured lights,
They cycle through small rainbows,
These thoughts are terrible tornadoes,
Smashing up my mellow mind tonight.

The last gasp of summer on the way out,
Reminds me of escaping,
Of adrenaline elevating,
A hot pursuit that ends with more than shouts.

A vision of suspension within deep meditation,
Clears my mind of fears,
Retains what I hold dear,
Slip away into a slumber of memories melded to imagination.

Ugh. Turned the portable to a less cold temperature hoping that would be more efficient to run and not get too cold. Didn’t realise there wasn’t a proper seal with the window. Woke up from a nap with both of us melting.

It’s now back up to normal trying to cool the place down.

Edit: the wildlife water is still out there. I just had the best idea. Why not weigh it down with a big chunk of ice? I can freeze it in a silicone bowl.

31.7Β°C inside. Awoken from deep sleep to quench my thirst for water. Sleeping's just great

[–] melbaboutown@aussie.zone 7 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago) (10 children)

Last night wasn't fun. I'd had the portable on and it was cold so I slipped on a jacket and fell asleep under a blanket... woke up sweating profusely because the cool didn't last at all.

Then this morning I was groggy and dropped a nearly full jar of instant coffee. It smashed everywhere. Luckily I have another plus had the stick vac already plugged in nearby but I vacuumed and mopped and was still finding little chunks of glass. Not a big deal for me if wearing slippers but I'm worried about little paws.

You probably already know this but reminder - you don't need fancy syrup to make homemade iced coffee/Big M. By stirring sugar and instant coffee in a very little hot water until the crystals dissolve and topping up with cold milk you avoid the gritty unsweetened taste of chucking those straight in. Ice cubes or icecream optional.

Edit: Icecream toppings also work as milk flavouring

I hate this. I'm exhausted but fidgety and bored, can't concentrate on anything to entertain myself, and this isn't helped by napping all day and the caffeine in dark chocolate.

thrashes

Rental inspection on Wednesday. Possibly the worst timing.

Most of the house is fine, but my bedroom is a proper nest right now and also is the hottest room in the house.

I need to: Vacuum, rearrange stuff, find places to store things, clean my desk, hope to survive, and make sure the cat isn't too stressed by any of this. Which he will be because he's a big baby(like me)

I am gonna go see Oppenheimer finally. I am only about six months out of the loop but found somewhere still playing it, and in 70mm. I am looking forward to three hours of movie theatre aircon.

Lunch was a salad roll, dinner will be cold roast chook and rice salad. Watermelon in the fridge for snacks, enough of everything for tomorrow too. I appreciate past me for ensuring future me does not have to cook on these hot days.

[–] imoldgreeeg@aussie.zone 6 points 8 months ago

Well the aircon in the movie theatre struggled but Oppenheimer was incredible. I am not a fan of super long movies but I wouldn't have wanted it shorter

Getting worried about the grid this weekend :( I still didn't fix the solar power thing

Edit: Melbcat pranked me before. I was looking around where my paint tubes went and turns out she was lying on them. Jokester.

Art rambles, cat vom

I had a go at sealing a small piece of the cardboard to prepare it for painting. Basically I mixed some acrylic close in colour to the cardboard and diluted it with water, and used it to thinly coat. Basically this is an attempt to do a toned ground but I'm using the light brown colour it already is. You're meant to use flow medium (because thinning acrylic paint too much with water means the binder isn't strong enough to keep the layer of paint on) but the clearance matte medium I got to use for that isn't here yet.

The cardboard absorbed a lot of the water though. I'm beginning to see why wood and sometimes canvas needed gesso. Trying to do this with a toothpick/spoon and a tiny brush from a kit also made me glad I did order the cheap brushes and palette knives.

Melbcat just gifted me vomit so I think she's going to the specialist :(

I'm out at the Ballarat botanic gardens extremely grateful for canopy shade atm. Only reason I slept last night was the aircon keeping the place from getting too hot, a good dose of melatonin, and knowing I had to be up at 6:30am today. After lunch we're just gonna chill out with air-conditioning until the sun starts going down. By the time I get to Melbourne it better not still be in the 30s :(

Tomorrow back to being safely ensconced at home

[–] bull@aussie.zone 5 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Moving over to Moama today. I was going to be coming home today but with that heat still sticking around I'll stay in my cheap motels with their kickass split systems thanks.

Time to shower and head off to my favourite local cafe for an eggs benny and an iced coffee before I hit the road.

Better writing than the original, 10/10.

He has also written The Soddit, The Sellamillion, and The Matrix Derided. Reccomend those as well tbh. One of my fav parody writers

I forgot to put the tinfoil on the afternoon-sun-facing windows and screen doorways off with blanket curtains. This mild summer caught me slipping.

(I can't just shut doors because cat accesses different things)
