I am trying to locate good online resources for thrifting and freecycling items, and have had some tips for good resources that I put into a list. I found out about Kijiji yesterday, but other than Wikipedia entries (and the sites branding-oriented info), I know little.

If anyone knows, I'd love to get some more information regarding Kijiji.

  • Is it frequently used by Canadians for classified ads regarding second hand?
  • Is there a more popular option?
  • Is it fequently used for free items/freecycling?
  • Is it moderated or unmoderated?
  • It seem to be free to post ads, but they charge for increased visibility.

Thank you in advance.

Kijiji is very hit-or-miss, but you can find good stuff. Not sure of the market penetration in your area, but VarageSale may be worth trying.

Ive used Kijiji. It is popular but Facebook marketplace is the go to these days. You can definitely get free items from it. Around where I live its mostly free wood scraps but I imagine in more urban areas there would be more. It is a moderated space but Id say its mostly self moderated by a reputation system.

Thank you for the input. I'll add it to Kijiji to the list.

The reason I haven't added Facebook Marketplace to the list is because Iand the people around me (in Sweden) have had bad experiences with it. More scammers, creeps, last-minute-hagglers, no-shows and thieves.

Definitely agree. I am not a fan of marketplace. My worst experiences selling things has been on marketplace, so I dont blame you for not adding it. Unfortunately where I am thats where most people buy things. Id love a better alternative.

I have had mostly good interactions on Kijiji. In Canada a lot of the sites have regional popularity. Before the dreaded (FB) marketplace stole the market... Craigslist was popular in Vancouver, UsedVictoria in Victoria, Kijiji - Canadawide but fading in some smaller communities. There are other Used(City) sites but UsedVictoria is the most active.
