There's some unrest because the Open Collective Foundation is stopping.

Don't worry, we use Open Collective Europe as a donations platform, they're going nowhere.

We've added some donation platforms, so if you would like to support us running our .world servers, you can do so here:

And for those wanting to donate crypto:

  • Monero address: 83tnuFN4f28jRxTBW9qGDad2U23qNE5nfeW4Pfyd85oWMW7J9gqpXi3S8FDbX5uEeCAKcGnSpS2XT5dGwYiELthg8XuDrxH
  • Cardano address: addr1v9qv6xvfwcx9ny56uag4umu6238sw2e7ff2kcxl3qe7p9esayjxgu

Thank you!

[Edit] Some of the links were broken, they should now all work! [Edit 20240314: Added Liberapay]

Reddit gold was such a great method of voluntary monetization. It'd be great if Lemmy would support something like that (although there are a ton of caveats.)

I had a $30/year subscription to Reddit for more than a decade.

[-] taanegl@lemmy.world 24 points 2 months ago

I think Reddit gold can be benign, but let's not exploit FOMO plz. That's how we got loot boxes and micro payments.

How to do "Reddit gold" on Lemmy, in a non-exploitive and ethical way? That would be the rub.

The real danger isn't on Lemmy.World, where I think the money would go where intended. The real danger is incentivizing people to spin up small instances in the hopes of collecting.

[-] vmachiel@lemmy.world 15 points 2 months ago

Great point, this will happen instantly.

[-] ruud@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

That won't work. I have 340k users on my servers and it just covers the running cost. So with a 100 user instance you would get peanuts.

[-] Serinus@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

I guess the cross server implementation would be difficult. If you buy credits on lemm.ee, and gild a lemmy.ml user, who honors it to... not show you ads?

I guess it's mostly just a decoration thing to support the comment/post and the server. Still, which server displays which awards could get thorny.

I would say, through activity, not through paying. Then for activity they will get rewarded.

Would any form of crypto donations be interesting as well? Personally a great fan of Monero.

[-] ruud@lemmy.world 28 points 2 months ago

Our Monero address is 83tnuFN4f28jRxTBW9qGDad2U23qNE5nfeW4Pfyd85oWMW7J9gqpXi3S8FDbX5uEeCAKcGnSpS2XT5dGwYiELthg8XuDrxH

Please add the crypto addresses to the site sidebar under donations. You also may want to consider accepting BTC, BCH and LTC. Glad your accepting XMR though for private donations.

How are you covering cash into crypto without paying bonkers fees? I tried to do it via coinbase and the fees are insane. Fuck that.

[-] NateNate60@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

You can use exchanges like Coinbase Advanced Trading and Kraken Pro to interact directly with the order book. They use the standard maker/taker model. 0.6% for takers on Coinbase Advanced Trading and 0.26% for takers on Kraken Pro. You can use "market" orders if all you want is a buy button and a sell button

[-] madcaesar@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Is there tutorials for this somewhere?

Which one of the platforms do you all get more money? I want to donate but I know each of the services get a cut.

[-] ruud@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago

Ko-Fi or PayPal directly, or crypto

Thanks for running this. I donated as long as i was able to, but had to stop recently due to my personal financial situation.

[-] menemen@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago

Hm, we are missing the "reporting for duty" emoji.

[-] ruud@lemmy.world 15 points 2 months ago

🫡 Thanks for the donation!

[-] JJROKCZ@lemmy.world 13 points 2 months ago

Are there any plans to use Liberapay? All of the donation platforms above don't support my home currency while Liberapay does

[-] Rooki@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

We will look into adding the donation platform.

If there is nothing that blocks us then we will add it.

Is there any preference for y’all on Opencollective vs Patreon? I would us Ko-Fi but not in a place right now to do $5/month, and that seems to be the minimum.

[-] ruud@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago

Ohh I didn't know there was a minimum setting in Ko-Fi. I changed the minimum there to 1. Thanks!

[-] subtext@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

Ooo fantastic, I’ll switch over to Ko-Fi!

[-] progettarsi@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

what's wrong with patreon?

[-] subtext@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

They said in the post that Ko-Fi is preferred due to the lower fees

[-] progettarsi@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

ah, i tought patreon was in something bad

[-] ruud@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

Hmm. Why does Lemmy mess up the links...

[-] DelvianSeek@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Happy to donate a little bit!

[-] MacedWindow@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Cant donate today but will soon. Is there any info on current funding levels/cost to run/goals trying to be reached?

[-] ruud@lemmy.world 14 points 2 months ago

We keep that at https://blog.mastodon.world (I know, I'm behind with that...)

[-] MCHEVA4EVA@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Does lemmy not get its money from the trevi fountain?

[-] NateNate60@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

The Ko-Fi link seems to be broken.

[-] ruud@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Yeah almost all links were broken, not sure how. I edited them, saved and they were broken again... For now it seems it's fixed.
