That's brilliantly functional and simple to do. Good idea. I should have done something like that when I planted saplings in a low box on the balcony. My cats dug them out out of curiosity (thankfully they did not use the box as a litter box), thankfully I had more unplanted saplings that I was going to give away otherwise, and the cats were not allowed out on the balcony again until my tomatoes grew bushier and taller.
