Meta's Threads app has a major flaw: you can't delete your Threads account without deleting your Instagram account.

Once in you cannot get out, or you lose your whole family and friends, like some religions.

That doesn't sound cultish at all.

I feel like this sounds worse than it is because you also don't create a Threads account, per se, in the first place. You use your Instagram account. If you want to use Threads, you activate your Threads profile; if you want to stop using Threads, you deactivate your Threads profile. Your Instagram account is still your Instagram account and exists independent of Threads. If you want a totally separate account for Threads, you need to create a second Instagram account for it.

Yep, this is just pure sensationalism, problems with Meta/Threads aside.

So basically the Niantic approach of tying platforms together with one account but not telling anybody.

[–] cutitdown@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

Nah, it's pretty clear when you open Threads and it says literally "Log in with Instagram". It's like logging into YouTube with your Google account and then being mad that deleting your "YouTube account" deletes your Google account. You can always disable your YouTube or Threads profile.

I guess I better delete my Instagram!

[–] MeowdyPardner@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Don't forget you can request your instagram zip archive and import all the posts (backdated too) into a pixelfed account :D

[–] albinanigans@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

Thanks! I probably won't go as far as importing... oh who am I kidding, I'll do that too!

[–] mrmanager@lemmy.today 4 points 1 year ago

Just delete all of that shit.

[–] blivet@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

Jeez, I remember when Instagram was a fun photo editing app that you could use without even creating an account.

[–] Ragnell@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

Wait. You can delete Instagram accounts? Huh, I figured they'd be like Facebook.

[–] FreeBooteR69@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

I don't have either, so i'm good! Being in this Fediverse sure makes things easier. /dimplesmile

It's not a flaw. It's a feature.

[–] Madison_rogue@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

This is messed up. You'd think it would be as easy as turning on or off. It should be that way! This guarantees that regardless of functionality and/or popularity, if users tire of the platform, Zucks still maintains their account unless you decide to ditch both.

[–] Phrodo_00@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

You can turn it on or off any time, but off doesn't mean deleted.

[–] sanimalp@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

Gonna be pretty hard to delete once they federate...

[–] symfonystation@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago
[–] Catch42@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Cool, so it's literally the opposite of Mastodon

[–] sanimalp@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

Once they federate, how will it get deleted?
