This looks like a fun little project that I think people here would enjoy! I have a little stack of tin foil takeaway boxes that I could use for this. Just need to get hold of the plexiglass (or the oven bag they suggest, but I'd like to do it entirely with reusables if possible).

EDIT: Grammar.

I've done this and it definitely works, but it's also finicky for sure. What I'd really like to know is how to build a DIY evacuated tube. AFAIK, the current very best designs for a solar oven use one, and almost nobody seems to manufacture the things.

Yeah exactly! I'm not sure how they're made... Maybe like a vacuum chamber that is also a glovebox? So you could put the tube+lid in the chamber, evacuate the atmosphere, use the gloves to apply the lid, then release the vacuum? Do gloveboxes work under vacuum?

Ha, quite funny that I keep finding people I know elsewhere on the Fediverse!

Lemmy's good so far. I like the format for discussions but it's a bit 'quiet'. How about you?

@frankPodmore aha! So I appear on Lemmy, but Lemmy responses don't appear here

I got really confused about the whole some brand name oven plastic thing, until a little text at the end said "Plexiglas also works."

I know you mention it in your text but it didn't really click due to the unfamiliar brand and the very concept of an "oven bag".

Yeah, I was similarly baffled!
