In the migration to lemmy, this community's admins have the chance to drop its startlingly racist name. Wasn't funny back then, and it's still not funny.

Why keep the nazi memorabilia around?

Not everything is about Nazis, not everything needs to be made about Nazis. It's just a funny name.

[–] Contramuffin@lemmy.world 41 points 1 year ago (4 children)

This is the correct response. The other comments saying that "the name being a Nazi reference isn't that big of a deal" is missing the point. Because it's not a Nazi reference.

It's just a self-aware joke about elitism in PC enthusiasts.

[–] gnarly@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

That doesn't remove the connotation for larger audiences. A layman will never know those details and will read master race as being about race. The social context and history are irrelevant, it's genuinely a dumb hill to die on.

[–] Aux@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

Human stupidity is infinite, there's no point catering to it.

[–] ceeg@lemmy.world -2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Race_(human_categorization) "master race" is definitionally about race and the use of that social categorization to commit genocide; the concept of race and so-called "race science" are not really funny tbh

[–] gnarly@lemmy.world -2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm in agreement with you btw lol I think the names dumb, wanting to keep the master race title is the dumb hill to die on.

I mean, haven't you heard the discussions around PC vs Console?

It's a tongue-in-cheek commentary of the vitriol surrounding that discussion, at least that was my take.

[–] Kaldo@kbin.social 8 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Exactly, it's also from a classic yahtzee video. If your first thought when you hear this in very clear context is nazi crap over a pretty funny piece of gaming history then that sounds like a you problem, nobody should actually be offended by something as benign as this. If anything even if that is somehow the case, nazis should be laughed at and made fun of instead of holding 'their words' in some hush-hush revered taboo state. Just by making stupid threads like these and calling attention to it you're giving them way too much power over you than they deserve to have.

[–] RandomlyAssigned@lemmy.world 45 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Only someone from an inferior console race would suggest that

Yeah, agreed.

Most people probably used to see it as mocking fascism (and the tendencies of brand/ecosystem fanboys to act like little tyrants) but these days I’m pretty sure they (the actual fascists) just welcome the free publicity.

Also, fuck Nazis.

[–] Aux@lemmy.world 39 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Go back to Reddit with this logic.

[–] minnieo@kbin.social 11 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

unrelated to the og post, but i truly hope we dont start the whole "go back to reddit" thing as if this is fucking 4chan 🤢

[–] kevinbacon@lemmy.world 35 points 1 year ago (4 children)

Too sensitive for internet, touch grass.

[–] sour@kbin.social -1 points 1 year ago

why do you care about people being sensitive

Fuck nazism but I never made the connection until it was mentioned. We all know the time will soon come to bow to our computer overlords, so this just seemed like foreshadowing to me.

[–] Nanno@lemmy.world 17 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Never made the connection. I think its a bit far fetched to get worked up about, but PC Gaming Race could work i guess

[–] zaph@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago (3 children)

So far fetched the tech industry has been working to get rid of master/slave and blacklist/whitelist for years. Definitely just OP noticed tho

[–] Narrrz@kbin.social 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Never made the connection on black/whitelisting before now. Huh.

[–] Kaldo@kbin.social 16 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Because that's not the connection, and you didn't make it because you're not looking for silly reasons to get upset over. The symbolism of dark vs light, fire vs darkness predates modern notions of racism and according to a quick wiki check, the etymology of the word blacklist has no relation to the color of anyone's skin either.

[–] Kaldo@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

And it's a ridiculous and empty gesture there as well as here.

[–] Zebrazilla@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

Just as far fetched, yes.

[–] Aesthesiaphilia@kbin.social 16 points 1 year ago

It was funny then and it's even more funny now that cringe lords like you are getting worked up over it. Pull the stick out of your ass. If you want to find something to get offended about there's plenty of real life racist shit.

[–] nadram@lemmy.world 15 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Agreed, it is a missed opportunity to drop that stinky reference and move on. I'm not offended by the name, i can live with it, but it's just cringe.

[–] snooggums@kbin.social 11 points 1 year ago (2 children)

The name is funny though, but if you don't like it make a new magazine with a better name and put up better content so people switch over.

I didn't even know someone had started one with the same name until this post.

Console peasants are so sensitive these days.

[–] CatZoomies@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

This thread violates Rule 2 - "Be respectful. Everyone should feel welcome here.", and also violates parts of Rule 1. Locking it down as it got too political and mean.

[–] hakase@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 year ago

Because it's funny. There are at least three communities named "PC Gaming" (on lemmy.ml, lemmy.ca, and kbin.social) if it bothers you enough to want to leave.

[–] FishSoupy@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Lol you said it, not us

Go back to reddit if you want to politicise everything

[–] NoTime@lemmy.one 6 points 1 year ago

PCIsBetterThanConsolesInLiterallyEveryWay just doesn't roll off the tongue as well.

[–] Rabbithole@kbin.social 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It was funny then, and it's funny now.

You do know that rightwing fuckwits actively use people like you as a recruiting tool to show people examples of "how idiotic and heavy handed the left is" when giving them reasons to join up for their Hitlerjerk wank-ring organizations.

They literally make compilations of examples like this to create the narrative that the opposition has lost their minds and are coming for everyone's free speech with their cancel culture, and use this to argue that somehow nazism is clearly the reasonable choice in contrast.

And as ludicrous as that is, it actually works depressingly well.

A certain willingness to have a sense of humour is a worthwhile thing to have when online. Nobody is being threatened by a reference to a joke about the console wars and the PC Vs Console circlejerk.

Plus, I have a really good gaming rig, and I tell you, those console peasants have it coming anyway. :P

[–] ceeg@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

why exactly should i give a shit what nazis think of me? get outta here with your goofy liberal ass

[–] gnarly@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

I certainly wouldn't want to be associate with Nazis, not sure why that's such a hard concept to grasp for y'all. The person doesn't give a shit about what Nazis think either, they just aren't using boogiemen like "the left" when trying to form thoughts and opinions.

[–] Rabbithole@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

Skill issue.

[–] kbity@kbin.social 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I definitely agree with Yahtzee that in retrospect the "PC Gaming Master Race" name didn't work out because the targets of the pejorative (as in elitist anti-console jackasses, not PC gamers as a whole) took it as an unironic badge of honour. "PC Gaming Dickslurp All-Stars" was funny.

[–] Narrrz@kbin.social -1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Uhh if the posts here are anything to go by, a lot of the people who subscribe, or at least pay attention to the posts on here are right wing and so possibly actual racists, if not nazis. So maybe leave them this space so they can out themselves?
