Memorial to "rif is fun for Reddit" Android app, aka "reddit is fun", shut down after June 30, 2023

...but I don't want to get rid of it! Been using RIF since 2011 and it'd feel so weird to take it off my home screen. I tried the Reddit app but it pollutes the front page with so much unnecessary shit that it becomes a chore to browse. Liking the look of Lemmy so far though.

Definitely deleted the app and put a Lemmy app in its place to keep that from happening.

Can I ask what app you use? Struggling to find the best one on Android

Connect for Lemmy, turn on List View and the AMOLED theme and it gets pretty close to the RiF experience. Not 1 for 1, but close enough for what I'm doing. I also put it in the spot RiF has been for 10 years 😞.

Omg I'm using this now and it's awesome, thankyou!

I've been using Jerboa and it's working out well. I've tried the connect for Lemmy app, but once I tried making a long comment and the text went behind my keypad and I couldn't scroll, so I couldn't see what I was typing. I'm always on the lookout for more apps and trying them out until I find one I really like. I'm looking forward to seeing Sync for Lemmy up in action.

I've been using Liftoff as it's the closest to how RIF felt to me. I was able to go in the settings and switch the posts to compact and have the font sizes smaller to get it as close to RIF as possible.

[–] Psaldorn@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Liftoff works well for me. Not too dissimilar from rif

[–] MouldyPriestASSHOLE@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Thanks! Downloaded it but struggling to get sign in to work. Assuming it's just the servers rn

[–] myuimu@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 year ago

It's definitely heavily geared towards iOS design principles, but if you can get past that wefwef.app has been the most stable and smooth experience I've found, despite being a PWA and not a native app.

I don't really like the apps, but if you want an app, you can add your main instance to homescreen and its essentially an app, just save your lemmy password in your browser and its no different from an app.

Think I'll do that, the web version is working nicely!

[–] ChocoboRocket@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Connect for lemmy has worked better for me than jerboa, but that could also be me (barely) learning how to navigate.

There's also the migration hugging everything to death to consider, but hug or no, connect for lemmy has worked quite well for me on Android!

[–] jasonwaterfalls@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I'm really liking liftoff. Tried a bunch but keep coming back to this one.

I moved Connect for Lemmy into the same spot and moved RIF to the 2nd page.

I can't bring myself to delete it yet, so that's where it lives for now.

[–] Magus@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago

Had to just remove it from my phone entirely to not do it.

[–] Fauji@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

Deleted RiF and replaced the same spot on my homescreen with wefwef app.

[–] smoll_pp_operator@vlemmy.net 7 points 1 year ago

I put Connect for Lemmy where my Baconreader was. It helps with the muscle memory bit.

[–] Dr_Chocolate@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I deleted RIF today, and downloaded Liftoff. It's not perfect but maybe it will get better. If people wanted to shut off public discourse on social media like Farcebook/Reddit/Twit, then they succeeded.

[–] alliestear@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 year ago

seconding, liftoff is a p close approximation of the rif visual experience for lemmy it seems like.

[–] Nemo@midwest.social 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Deleted it so links default to browser instead of a defunct app.

[–] Vincepg13@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

I went into the app settings and cleared the default links to achieve the same. Felt too sad to delete the app entirely :(

[–] Prasaedonium@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

I just replaced it with Jerboa, although I keep going to wefwef nowadays since it's such a good web app

[–] Localnative13@lemmy.fmhy.ml 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yes, but surprisingly my rig still works to see the homepage and saved my fav subs, just can't logon to post or vote. So it's still not the same.

I did see some posts about some how patching rif to a "vanced" version I wanna check out so I can keep tabs on other communities that are migrating while I continue transitioning over to lemmy

Haven't deleted it as it's still working when not logged in. Only really used RiF for the NSFW subs anyway.

[–] AlecSadler@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

I uninstalled all my reddit apps to avoid the habit or temptation. Fuck Steve Huffman.

[–] rDrDr@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (3 children)

I keep it around so that when I click reddit links in Google they go to RIF instead of the dog shite mobile site. Can't log in or comment though.

I hid it from the app drawer/list, so I can only get to it by searching or with a link.

I put the connect app where I had rif on my phone so I press that instead.

I do still get confused when it's not rif.

[–] Chozo@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

I don't have the heart to uninstall it yet. :(

[–] Altreus@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 year ago

Keeping it around in case Reddit comes back to life... Or shuts down completely

I did a send off to my RIF by listening to Pantera's Walk, then deleted the app.

[–] HowShouldIKnow@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago

What did you say?

[–] ChamrsDeluxe@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I am keeping Bacon Reader, a bit sentimental about it. Had it about 12 years. Using liftoff for Lemmy now. Doesn't compare to BR, but It'll do.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.one 3 points 1 year ago

Nope, because I deleted it. I see now it's not even listed on the play store.

If saner minds prevail, and it comes back, I'll reinstall it, but it doesn't look like that's happening soon.

[–] Danatronic@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I replaced it with Liftoff.

[–] Poeticbiscuit@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Honestly, not as much anymore. Transitioning to Lenny was quite smooth with Connect and it made me aware of the Fediverse, which is such a fascinating concept.

RIF will always have a place in me, and I have not, and will probably not delete it anytime soon. I don't see it from the Playstore anymore, so all the more reason not to. Instead, like what I read somewhere here, I created an "Apps Graveyard" folder and placed it there, keeping me far from unconsciously tapping on RIF for updates.

It will probably take some time.

[–] heavy@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 year ago

I un-installed it when the blackout started but I understand the feeling. I definitely use my phone less, probably am disconnected from some current events, but I'm trying to participate more here and in the fediverse in general.

[–] flashmedallion@lemmy.nz 3 points 1 year ago

I decided to test the ReVanced patch for using your own API key out of curiosity and it worked great so I've kinda just kept it. Still using it to check into a couple of small communities but otherwise coming here for my scrolling and headlines

[–] Monkeyhog@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

No, I deleted it. Why would I keep something installed that served no purpose?

[–] SkyerixBOI@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Im currently using the wefwef web app and its pretty good. Going to wait for Sync for Lemmy or for Artemis.

You will find a replacement, dont worry!

[–] finthechat@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

No, I think a clean separation works best. Over the last month, I've cut my Reddit use down from probably a few hours a day to maybe 2-3 minutes a day just to read up on sports news, and I only do that via old.reddit with RES. The time I used to spend looking at RIF has now been reallocated to reading e-books and getting out of bed in a timely manner.

However, on my phone I have left the space empty where the RIF icon used to be. o7.

[–] AnonymousLlama@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

Was a sad day when I had to uninstall Sync. Maybe I'll try the re-pack you can do to use your own API key

[–] Ookami38@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I replaced it in my quick access tray (okay, sync, not rif, still) with my lemmy app of choice. I kept launching it anyway and figured this was the easiest way to get over reddit lol

[–] Shadowpino@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I keep doing it. I only deleted it off my home screen today and now there's a "RiFt" on my screen :( I don't have the heart to uninstall it yet.
