I'm personally not a big fan of those renditions and agree that it will take away from the park area.
But at the same time, I can't think of a better way of doing this and it desperately needs doing.

That end of the park is so rarely used. Not a huge fan of the design but it needs doing and I think most of the critics will forget about it and move onto something else within a couple of years of it being finished.
