Alternatively, maybe you can "flick" the maximized image up and it will dismiss it? Not sure if that would be easier.

Yeah I was just going to comment this considering that's exactly how I used Apollo.
This works if you saved wefwef as a PWA on your home screen.
This is the only annoyance I have with this app at the moment. I hope it gets fixed soon, as I already lost my scroll position on the home feed many times due to this
Also trying to zoom exits the photo viewer which is kind of obnoxious, but not necessarily required either. Though I guess that's an app issue, but really a Lemmy issue.
Similarly: All the meatball context menus (the three horizontal dots) have the same behavior. But those ones don't really bother me as much since they have a large "Cancel" button right at the bottom.
