Now that a lot of 3rd party apps for reddit have shut down there have been loads of new users joining the various Lemmy instances. So who got here today and what has been your experience so far?

I'm here to help should you have any questions about Lemmy, lemmy.world or life in general (I can not really recommend that last one).

Anyway, welcome! Hope you enjoy your stay 😁

EDIT: I created seperated threads for this not too long ago but I think it's useful to post them again.

  • Some things might still be confusing to people, I read a comment below about someone not knowing how to browse content from different instances for example. I really suggest you read this post by lemmy.world admin @ruud which does a wonderful job to explain a lot of it.
  • If you're wondering what 3rd party apps there are available, this thread seems to list them all!

Came to Lemmy during the initial blackouts and while you can still feel the youngness of the platform, slowly with more people switching over and 3rd party reddit apps making the switch to Lemmy it's starting to feel like a new home.

Seriously. The progress in usability both on the app side and on the website side (after the 18.1 update today) have been staggering over the past month.

I am a Belgian living in Taiwan and I was keeping an eye on r/belgium because “roots”. Will keep looking here from now on! Good morning Belgium! Just finished lunch here…

[–] Maraval26@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

May I ask how it does look like to live in Taiwan ? Are you afraid for your future there because of geopolitics ?

[–] WordGhost@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

My experience is of course anecdotal and completely subjective. I have spent the major part of my Belgian life in Brussels and the main differences I am noticing are, in no particular order:

  • I feel a lot more secure regarding public safety.
  • Traffic and road infrastructure is a mess (and therefore traffic safety is a mess also). Pedestrians are still at the bottom of the hierarchy in the collective mind, nothing yields when you need to cross a road), although the law states the contrary. This is like Belgium in the 70s. This makes driving problematic because If I drive like I would in Belgium I become unpredictable to the other drivers here.
  • For every car on the road, there are at least 10 scooters buzzing around. And they overtake on the right side.
  • In Belgium we close the doors to keep the cold outside, here we close the doors to keep the heat and humidity out.
  • I cannot imagine summer without Air Conditioning: moving around without a car is a problem if I need to keep a decent look at my destination: I have an approximate range of 1 km walking outside before I start liquefying from sweat (800m if it is sunny).
  • Cold can hurt physically when under-equipped but you can keep adding layers. Against heat and humidity there is a point when you cannot remove layers anymore.
  • There are convenience stores everywhere. They are open 24h/7d and you can almost buy anything there (they have AC also :) )
  • Dealing with the banking system here is hell. Especially as a non-citizen.
  • Service is way faster here, as an example (but I think this is exceptional) my modem was down yesterday and the telecom company dispatched an engineer to my apartment 2 hours later (after asking if it was ok for me).

Regarding the geopolitical situation, I personally do not feel scared because I am convinced that China does not have the military means to take over Taiwan without having to pay a (too) heavy toll. I am angry at their contant disinformation though. Taiwan has never been a full part of China, yet they try to gaslight the world in thinking so. There is no reunification. It would actually be an annexation.

Well, as usual the situation is way more complex and subtle than what people are usually led to believe.

Anyway, I love it here.

I replaced Apollo with Memmy on my board in the same place. I still have muscle memory to hit there when I’m bored, and scroll. Lemmy isn’t the same, and it’s not as good as Reddit in a lot of ways - but I’m loving seeing the enthusiasm for updates and progress. It’s really fun seeing things coming together. I view the recent stability issues as a great thing. It shows there’s a lot of interest in migrating.

Hopefully this place continues to succeed.

Related…this response went through on the first try. That hasn’t happened all day. Woohoo! 😅

[–] DV8@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yesterday they were upgrading the server so I figure the delays were because of that. I am honestly curious about how all of it is running because I feel like I could perhaps be helpful. Though on the other hand, too many people in the kitchen doesn't help anyone.

[–] antik@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Hi @DV8 I don't think some extra eyes ever hurt. Actually the admins of a few instances were working together for yesterdays lemmy.world update. You can read more on that in @ruud's post on the subject here: https://lemmy.world/post/920294

There was even a zoom meeting during the upgrade. So next time you can probably join in if you're interested! Once 0.18.1 is stable that'll be the next one.

Anyway, it's really cool to see that the people behind the different instances work together to better Lemmy as a whole instead of just "their" instance.

Came from Reddit following advice from my dad. He knows nothing of Reddit but follows movements in society. I told him about Reddit and how they treated some developers. He knew about it trough a colleague and asked me if I knew about Lemmy.

I used Reddit mostly for Synology/unraid/memes as a lurker. Now I try to post more 😇

[–] Soulplayer@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Yeah I was surprised he knew about it. Then again it was picked up by mainstream media (shows how Reddit mis calculated this )

You're everywhere! So, are you belgian or french? :D

[–] V4uban@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

French speaking Belgian, so a bit of both I guess :D

[–] Rompetomp@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

It’s not the same as reddit, but I’m hopeful. Memmy (the app) has been growing and maturing very fast, they’re doing a great job there!

[–] Mysteriarch 5 points 1 year ago

Welcome to the Fediverse to all new people! It takes a bit getting used to, but this is by the community, for the community!

The 'verse seems to experience a double whammy this weekend: both Reddit as Twitter refugees seem to be flocking back again, putting some strain on the servers. So be patient!

[–] GbyBE@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I just got here after looking for an alternative to Reddit. So far, I have to say I'm quite impressed by how well it works. I haven't had any major issues yet. I hope Lemmy gains some traction and will continue to grow, but I also hope it doesn't grow too quickly.

I still end up on Reddit every now and then when a search takes me there, but I don't go there to browse anymore.

I like it. I like that there is no Karma, the possibility to view downvotes. Actually I’m not missing Reddit.

I still have to understand how I can view other Lemmy instances content. And how to login using brave on IOS which is currently not working.

[–] antik@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Hi @Maraval26@lemmy.world, it can get a bit confusing in the beginning but the following is a must-read to get started imho https://lemmy.world/post/37906

[–] Maraval26@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Thank you for the link. I read it and it was helpful. Now understand that I can read, post and subscribe to communities on other instances while staying connected only to Lemmy.world.

[–] antik@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Glad it helped you!

I saw a post about lemmy on reddit. So I gues Im part of the migration.

Im curious to see how its different from reddit and how the platform will develop. But I really like it!

Got here during the original blackout and while I was extremely active about 8 years ago I had become more of a lurkerbas everything seemed to have moved a lot more to the right. Also trying to engage and post more so that there's actually a reason for people to stick around. In that sense it would have been nice if there's references to hear at the old place.

[–] StijnVVL@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I just joined today on Lemmy after the reddit fallout and Baconreader not being an option anymore.

I was already on Mastodon after the Twitter fallout. I made a new account on Lemmy but there seems to be some sort of link? Can anyone explain what the difference is exactly please?

[–] Mysteriarch 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

A link between Lemmy & Mastodon you mean? They share the same protocol: ActivityPub. There are many other types of software that do, and they can all communicate with each other. So you could check, follow or comment on Lemmy through your Mastodon (someone did today in the slowchat!), although it's not the optimal experience. For some types of content it doesn't really matter that much (I'm thinking of the photo-sharing Pixelfed and Mastodon for instance), for others it changes the user experience quite a bit.

[–] StijnVVL@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (9 children)

Thanks for your explanation! It does make more sense now. I'm more in favor of the Lemmy interface and way of working so I suppose it's better to have 2 separate accounts (one on each platform)? Or can I use my Mastodon credentials to logon to Lemmy?

I might be completely mistaken and don't understand it at all.

[–] laejoh@fosstodon.org 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

@StijnVVL @Mysteriarch I searched for @belgium on my fostodon.org and clicked on followed. Now I can see all the posts and reply to them.

[–] laejoh@fosstodon.org 2 points 1 year ago

@StijnVVL @Mysteriarch @belgium To add to the confusion, I actually use emacs as my mastodon client :D
